Eternal battle of good and evil is a canvas that is used by many creators in one form or another. However, it is hard to think of more pronounced characters representing those values than angels and demons. In Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, we are thrown into a midst of fight between those beings. The fate of the world lies in hands of a mighty demigod, whom the players will impersonate in this title. The main character, though, is nameless, or rather we are the ones in charge of giving him a name. Despite this freedom of choice, many fans wonder if this person has any canon or default one. Let’s see if there is anything that would shed some light on this matter.

Canon name of protagonist in SMT V Vengeance

Even though it is possible to select a name for the protagonist in Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, a lot of fans would like to know if there is any canon one envisioned by the creators. As things currently stand, there is no such name for the protagonist. However, many SMT titles had it added at a later stage, so it may happen for the latest one, too. The only title we have for the main character is Nahobino, which is given to him regardless of our choice. It is more of a moniker/race referring to character’s unique abilities and a union between the protag and his ally, Aogami.

There is one trace of a canon name though, yet it’s all but official. In the original Switch release, of Shin Megami Tensei V, if a debug mode is used and players change language after naming character, it reverts to a default one. In English version it calls the character Kei Amemura (via Megami Tensei Wiki), which was confirmed by some players. Doing this trick in the Japanese version, however, does not produce the same result and makes his name “Shujinko”, which roughly translates to “Protagonist”. This undermines the theory of the canon name being actually Kei.

According to the curious fan on Steam, the method mentioned above does not work for the Vengeance edition. After changing the game’s language, it will simply ask to give them a new name and the prefilled values are simply “Name Surname”. This further confirms the theory that the main character does not have a canon name… yet. Again, there is a possibility that it will be specified later on by the creators. Let’s keep our fingers crossed!
