After Brief Spike on Steam, Battlefield 2042's Back to Normal

Battlefield 2042 briefly attracted many players. The latest FPS from the DICE studio is still doing well on Steam, but again less people are playing it than the previous installment in the series.

Battlefield 2042 is once again losing popularity after a brief spike on Steam. After a record-breaking October, during which over 107,000 users were playing the game simultaneously at its peak, the highest daily player count on the platform dropped to below 20,000 (via SteamDB).

In fact, having over 17,000 players at once is a much better result than what the latest Battlefield has been able to boast in the past two years. The title made it into the top 100 of the most popular games on Steam.

However, the game is only slightly ahead of Battlefield 1 in the ranking and is decisively beaten by the second-to-last installment of the DICE studio's shooter series. For the latest installment in a popular game series, this is a disappointing outcome. Because of the ongoing downward trend, it could become even weaker soon.

The perception of Battlefield 2042 has warmed up a bit in the eyes of fans, partly due to subsequent updates. The latest update was released on January 12, catching some gamers off guard who had anticipated that the game would be swiftly dropped following its undeniably catastrophic premiere.

Nevertheless, the majority of players are still lamenting the state of BF 2042, including the promising Battlefield Portal mode. It remains available, but it hasn't received big updates for a long time. Moreover, the game doesn't receive updates as often as it should according to players (via Reddit / Steam).

Perhaps Battlefield 2042 will regain its popularity with the start of Season 7, set to kick off in March and introduce two major maps. Earlier, the game will receive the next big updates: 3.3 (January 30) and 3.4 (February 20; via X).
