When introducing the Mega Man series into the age of 16-bit, Capcom decided to improve both graphics and gameplay mechanics. The ideas of the developers led to the creation of a new sub-series titled Mega Man X. It was introduced in 1993 and received its final entry eleven years later. Mega Man X Legacy Collection is a compilation of four games in the series. It was created in order to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the franchise. The collection includes the following titles: Mega Man X5, Mega Man X6, Mega Man X7, and Mega Man X8. The game was released at the same time as the collection titled Mega Man X Legacy Collection that includes four previous entries in the series.

Plot

Mega Man X games take place in the 22nd century. Reploids, androids with free will, exist on Earth. Some of them belong to the Maverick genre and they rose against humanity. The Earth is protected by the titular Mega Man X – a robot that is the successor to the legendary Mega Man. The protagonist is accompanied by Zero and shape-shifting Reploid Axl.

Mechanics

The platform games available in Mega Man X legacy Collection 2 are strongly inspired by games from the classic Mega Man series. The action is presented from a side perspective and the players are traveling through futuristic locations, avoiding traps, and fighting encountered enemies. When compared to original Mega Man games, X series features more serious story and a darker style. Similarly to Mega Man, Mega Man X can obtain weapons from defeated bosses. Contrary to his predecessor, he can slide through sloping surfaces and bounce from walls. He can also gather new equipment in order to increase his combat potential.

Game modes

In addition to story campaigns, Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2 features a special mode in which players can fight two selected bosses simultaneously, by using three selected weapons. The results from this mode can be uploaded to the online scoreboards. The game also features a video that presents events that occurred before the first Mega Man X, and a virtual museum with attractive content.

Technical aspects

While Mega Man X5 and Mega Man X6 feature two-dimensional pixel-art graphics, Mega Man X7 and Mega Man X8 features three-dimensional graphics. In both cases, the developers of the compilation refreshed the visuals of the included games, while also allowing to play each game in their original form. The soundtrack features some new tracks.
