Description
Species: Northern White-Faced Owl (Noordelijke witwangdwergooruil)
Latin name: Ptilopsis Leucotis
Originates from a band across Africa between the Sahara and the equator.
Current status: Least Concern
Did you know:
…It was once known as one species together with the Southern White-Faced Owl, and called the White-Faced Scops-Owl.
…These Owls have a notable defense mechanism; when faced with a predator (animals, also other Owls, slightly larger than itself) they flare their wings to appear larger. When faced with a predator much larger than itself, they pull their feathers inward, elongate their bodies, and narrow their eyes to thin slits. They may even fold a wing cross-wise across their chest to hide the lighter-colored feather of their underparts. It is thought they camouflage themselves to look like a dead branch, a concealing posture.
