We’re Cooking Up Some Monsters; Let’s Play D&D With Senshi from ‘Delicious in Dungeon’
Which entry in the Monster Manual do you think looks tastiest? Today we’re playing D&D with Senshi from Delicious in Dungeon.
Delicious in Dungeons wrapped up a few weeks ago with a second season already promised and on the way… Which makes sense because people loved this show. If you’re not familiar, the premise is your average D&D party, complete with goofs, arguments, stupid ideas, and near misses with success.
Only instead of trying to convince the DM that they should be allowed to keep every creature as a pet, they decide to eat them all instead. Why? Leaving the dungeon to buy more supplies wastes a lot of time, and those dungeon critters look tasty. So really, why not?
It’s a show that very successfully balanced silly and heartfelt, with food that looked as good as Food Wars (but without… y’know, all of that) or Ghibli (almost), with a cast that managed to come right up to the precipice of being cliche and then took a hard turn. Honestly, this show is great and if you haven’t watched it yet, you should.
Runaway fan favorite of the show is the group’s chef, Senshi. He’s been living in the dungeon for a while and knows all of the best ways to cook up most anything you’ll find in the a monster manual. So let’s invite him over for an adventure and good meal and play some D&D with…
Senshi
Because Delicious in Dungeon is so comparable to a classic D&D adventure, the characters tend to fit pretty easily into classes, but Senshi can be a little harder to place. There isn’t really a ‘cook’ subclass for D&D. I was playing around with the idea of making him an alchemist, but I didn’t think Artificer would really work for him. In the end I sort of backwards engineered this from ‘How can I make sure he gets the Heroes’ Feast spell?’ That took me to Cleric or Druid, and I didn’t think Druid quite fit. But Domain of Nature Cleric could.
Senshi’s role in the group is back-up fighter, and sometimes guide, but mostly he makes sure that everyone stays healthy, strong, and full up on mana with the healing power of a good meal. And while he’s at it, he’s been known to make sure the ecosystem of the dungeon continues chugging along the way it should.
I was sure to make sure he had a little extra fortitude with a feat. But more importantly, the Chef feat let’s him cook healing meals for his party. Which is right on the money.
Moving into spells was a little interesting though. Canonically, Senshi doesn’t like, use, or trust magic… But Cleric is a magic heavy class. Realistically, in a D&D setting you’ll probably use spells. But for our purposes here, I tried to pick spells that maybe wouldn’t always feel like magic. Detecting poison and purifying food and drink? Recognizing poisonous ingredients is just a natural part of dungeon cooking. Plant growth? He’s seen doing some dungeon gardening. But we also have Create Food and Water and Heroes’ Feast… and while he may say he’s just cooking, anyone who’s bad in a kitchen knows it’s magic.
