This Is Not a Game is the extraordinary untold story of the internet’s first conspiracy theory, the legend of Ong’s Hat.
Marc Fennell will dive deep into a previously unexplored world of tech hippies, eccentric web subcultures and simmering paranoia, uncovering how this tongue-in-cheek artistic experiment backfired on its creator and went on to influence much of what’s wrong with the internet today.

When two Stanford graduate students set out to create a new kind of cigarette that wouldn’t kill them, they didn’t foresee all the obstacles that lay ahead — or the powerful forces their invention would unleash. Nearly 10 years after the launch of the JUUL, Backfired: The Vaping Wars asks: Could e-cigarettes have been the solution to one of the world’s most pressing public health problems—or was this technology doomed to introduce a whole new generation to nicotine, and end up perpetuating an intractable addiction?

In weeks after the September 11 attacks, 18-year-old Mansoor Adayfi was kidnapped by Afghan militia and sold to US forces for bounty money. After months of interrogations, he was sent to the US military prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, as one of its first prisoners. Like the nearly 800 other men imprisoned at Guantanamo, Adayfi didn’t know why he was imprisoned or for how long. He had never seen a skyscraper and couldn’t imagine what the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center looked like, much less how they were destroyed.

The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

Brilliant
I could not wait till the end. This is one of the most entertaining pods out right now. As an internet user since 1994 it's absolutely fascinating to find out what was lurking inside the prehistoric web.

A Fascinating Look at the Early Internet
This book positions itself as an account of how the conspiracy theory called Ong’s Hat got started. I suppose it did that but I learned more about Ong’s Hat reading Wikipedia than I did from this book. (Ong’s Hat was a 1990s conspiracy theory about a bunch of scientists who it was said had created a device called “the egg” and used it to visit a parallel earth.) What this book is really about, in my opinion, is how the early internet became a place where people could meet and talk about topics that no one else they knew was interested in. This actually became a breeding ground for conspiracy theories (although many such theories obviously existed before the internet). It’s an interesting book reminding us that the internet used to be a lot more primitive. I had forgotten what it was like in the early days and this brought back some memories. I would read it more for the early internet than for Ong’s Hat.

Enlightening history of www and first internet conspiracy theory
Like the history. Differ with conclusion in the analysis that I think biggest lesson should be that the problems derived directly from initial deception that "This is not a game" that their story line was true. Also disagree with how Q Anon is similar. The fault for people fall for Q Anon and similar conspiracy theories lies with purposeful deception by politicians and media's inclination to conspire WITH politicians. Then when truth comes out ie Hunter Laptop that CIA and FBI swore was Russian disinfo info bc they do NOT believe in democracy and majority rule so are justified to do deceive....this is the basis for distrust and confusion

Interesting and fun time piece
This was originally a podcast. It would have been one of the better podcasts but I don’t think bundling things together makes a book. The story starts off a bit all over the place I skipped to the second chapter. You don’t need to spend 1/4 of the book trying to set the scene of the story. Or maybe if you never experienced it you do, I guess it’s personal preference. The story was interesting and compelling. The even the people who lived in ogs hat and their parallels with people online was nicely done. I liked this thoughts about the story at the end too.

WOW!
At first I thought this is kind of boring for me, maybe it's geared to a different personality and I almost shut it off. then the last half hour of the story hit, and the hairs on the back of my neck were standing up. I realized this is not a boring story, but a pathway that leads you the incredible place we as a species find ourselves in. previously when I would see blatant anarchy, that has very little basis in reality (presently college student protests) I used to ask my wife how did this situation get this crazy, Now I know it's Ong's Hat all over again. Feel free to click on my name, I'm a seasoned reviewer, and it is difficult to get 5 stars across the board from me.
