She’s rewriting his love story. But can she rewrite her own?

Emma Wheeler desperately longs to be a screenwriter. She’s spent her life studying, obsessing over, and writing romantic comedies—good ones! That win contests! But she’s also been the sole caretaker for her kind-hearted dad, who needs full-time care. Now, when she gets a chance to re-write a script for famous screenwriter Charlie Yates—The Charlie Yates! Her personal writing god!—it’s a break too big to pass up.

Emma’s younger sister steps in for caretaking duties, and Emma moves to L.A. for six weeks for the writing gig of a lifetime. But what is it they say? Don’t meet your heroes? Charlie Yates doesn’t want to write with anyone—much less “a failed, nobody screenwriter.” Worse, the romantic comedy he’s written is so terrible it might actually bring on the apocalypse. Plus! He doesn’t even care about the script—it’s just a means to get a different one green-lit. Oh, and he thinks love is an emotional Ponzi scheme.

But Emma’s not going down without a fight. She will stand up for herself, and for rom-coms, and for love itself. She will convince him that love stories matter—even if she has to kiss him senseless to do it. But . . . what if that kiss is accidentally amazing? What if real life turns out to be so much . . . more real than fiction? What if the love story they’re writing breaks all Emma’s rules—and comes true?

Critic reviews

"Center, the prolific author of many romances, clearly understands what it takes to create a winning romantic comedy and puts Charlie and Emma through many of the most delightful rom-com tropes (enemies to lovers, forced proximity). But the book, like all of Center’s work, doesn’t completely eschew darkness—both Emma and Charlie are dealing with trauma and grief. A winning romance that deftly balances heft and humor."—Kirkus

"Winsome and charming, Center's latest is that perfect blend of romance and overcoming life challenges that her readers treasure."—Booklist (starred review)

Editorial Review

The rom-com of all rom-comms
While I can’t tell you if it’s the mix of one-liners, the swoony romance, or the beautiful HEA that keeps me coming back to Katherine Center’s novels, I can tell you that her latest, The Rom-commers, has all of that—and more. When Emma Wheeler gets the opportunity to rewrite a script for Charlie Yates, the screenwriter she has idolized for years, she knows she cannot pass on the opportunity. When they start working together, she quickly learns that the man working on a rom-com doesn't believe in love or love stories, and what ensues is a delightful grumpy/sunshine romance story filled with humor, heart, and undeniable chemistry. Center's long-time narrator, Patti Murin, has yet again graced us with her excellent narration, solidifying this author/ narrator pairing as an all-time favorite. — Patty R., Audible Editor

Another standout rom com from Katherine center

I truly look forward to KC’s books for their unique storylines and this one was no different, fun with a twist or two and the characters always have rich development and solid dialogue. I never feel like it’s pandering or so often with rom coms that the main characters can’t get out of their own way. I even laughed out loud numerous times. The only thing this book really needed a bit more of was a little more chemistry, the main female character Emma had it in spades for the main male character but he was written so reserved that it didn’t really crackle the way I’d hoped. Overall still a 5 star read.

Hooray for rom coms

Loved the thesis in this. Happy stories are important to our culture. Deeper than I expected. More needed than I knew. This is a fabulous defense of the genre and also an entertaining tale.

Cute listen!

I thought this was a cute listen with some humor and some depth, with good audio performance. It may not be a new all time favorite but I enjoyed the listen and don’t regret it! The characters and their personalities weren’t played out, but almost unexpectedly bizarre in their personalities and decisions, so it had a fresh feeling.

Terrific Narration, Lovely Story

The narration was fantastic! She acted out every line with so much feeling that I couldn’t help but see every line as if I was watching it play out in real time.

Ultimately this is book about love in all its forms, loneliness, and being grateful for all the wonderful things that you do have in your life. It’s hopeful and earnest in the best way, not the Velveeta Cheese way.

The characters are lovely and fallible, but not to the point where you can’t even understand why someone would ever want to be with them and it’s so frustrating to read, but in that relatable, no one is perfect and that’s normal every day life. It’s sweet and funny, and I honestly appreciated the love of Rom-Coms and defending their value so much. Society *would* be so much better if we embraced love stories of all kinds and didn’t reject them because there’s something supposedly inherently girly about them - heaven forfend. Also, dummies, marketing to 51% of the population seems like a great business strategy to me.

I loved that the male lead was self-aware when he was being a jerk and had an actual story arc to improve himself, and that the female lead didn’t need to change everything about herself to be loved. It may have gone on a liiiiiittle too long before getting them together at the end, but all is forgiven. And can I just make a plea that every book have an epilogue? I want to know what happens in the future but not everything needs to be a series! So appreciative!

A laugh-out-loud, feel good RomCom!

If you loved the Bodyguard, you’ll love this one, too! Great characters, entertaining dialogue, interesting plot line, depth without too much angst- this one has everything I’m looking for in a book. The MC shares my view on rom-coms— all fiction, really— basically life is hard, our books (movies) should be happy! I like mostly light-hearted stories and that’s what KC has delivered in her more recent work.

* for the moms listening around littles* This story is a very slow burn romance. No steamy scenes, mostly very mild language with a few adult words sprinkled in. No agenda pushing and no slamming/shaming any beliefs/genders/groups- this is a purely entertaining book! (Rare treat these days, am i right??)

I laughed out loud, i cried for the characters’ hurts, and i found myself on the edge of my seat.

Highly recommend!
