Huawei has announced its second clamshell foldable smartphone, the Huawei Pocket S. This handset is essentially a more affordable variant of the Huawei P50 Pocket which launched in December last year.

The Huawei Pocket S is now official, a more affordable variant of the P50 Pocket

Huawei aimed to present a mid-range foldable, and this is basically it. As far as the design goes, it seems like Huawei recycled the P50 Pocket body. Initial reports suggested it won’t include a second display, but it does.

This phone has the same dimensions as the Huawei P50 Pocket, and its colorway is the main differentiating factor. It folds right down the middle, the bezels are quite thin, and a centered display camera hole sits on the main display.

Speaking of which, its main display measures 6.9 inches, and it’s a fullHD+ (2790 x 1188) OLED panel. That is a 120Hz display, and it offers a 300Hz touch sampling rate. It also supports 1,440Hz high frequency PWM dimming. This display can present 1.07 billion colors.

The Snapdragon 888 4G gets replaced by the Snapdragon 778G 4G

The Snapdragon 778G SoC from Qualcomm fuels this handset. 4G is supported, not 5G, though, due to the US ban. The phone comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB of storage. You can even expand that storage up to 256GB.

A 4,000mAh battery is included here, and 40W wired charging (Huawei SuperCharge) is supported. There are two SIM card slots included here, and HarmonyOS 3.0 comes pre-installed. Do note that the phone launched in China only, for now, hence the HarmonyOS 3.0 software.

A 40-megapixel main camera (True-Chrome camera, f/1.8 aperture) is backed by a 13-megapixel ultrawide camera (f/2.2 aperture, 2.5cm macro, 10-channel multi-spectral sensor). A 10.7-megapixel unit (f/2.2 aperture) sits on the front side of the phone.

A side-facing fingerprint scanner is also included

A side-facing fingerprint scanner is also included here. The phone comes with Bluetooth 5.2 as well, and Wi-Fi 802.11 ax (2.4GHz and 5GHz). Type-C USB 3.1 (Gen1) sits at the bottom.

The Huawei Pocket S measures 170 x 75.5 x 7.2mm when unfolded, and 87.3 x 75.5 x 15.2mm when folded. It weighs 190 grams.

The Huawei Pocket S pricing starts at CNY5,988 ($822), and it’s already available to pre-order in China. We’re not sure if the phone will make its way to more markets, but it probably will.
