Some Galaxy Watch users are starting to get a sleep apnea detection feature. This happens one day before the launch of the Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra. The brand will probably debut the feature in its next-gen watches, while older models could receive it widely in the coming months. Recently, the company also launched a new BioActive sensor for future smartwatches.
Sleep apnea is a delicate condition that causes interruptions in breathing during the sleep of those affected. The first time Galaxy Watches were linked to the monitoring of this condition was in February when Samsung received FDA approval to integrate it in the US. Since then, no new developments have emerged in this regard. However, now the feature seems to be closer than ever.
Sleep apnea detection is available on some Galaxy Watch devices running beta software
A Redditor reported that their Galaxy Watch got the Sleep Apnea feature in the last few hours. The option appeared after updating the Samsung Health Monitor app, which also includes details on how to use it. However, this does not appear to be a massive rollout but rather testing for One UI Watch 6 beta participants. Currently, the beta is available for the Galaxy Watch 4, 5, and 6.
According to the Samsung Health Monitor app, sleep apnea detection requires analyzing the user’s sleep for at least two nights. During the analysis, the Galaxy Watch will track the number of “relative blood oxygen decreases” the person shows. This way, the device will be able to determine if the user suffers from the condition and at what level. After a couple of nights, the feature will turn off automatically.
It will arrive on Galaxy Watch 4 onwards
The Samsung Health Monitor app also includes compatibility details for the sleep apnea feature. It says that it will be available from the Galaxy Watch 4 onwards, on devices running at least Wear OS 5 with One UI Watch 6. While there is no official confirmation, it is likely that sleep apnea will be available first on the Galaxy Watch 7 and Watch Ultra. Meanwhile, older models may have to wait for the One UI Watch 6 wide rollout. Those interested in testing it can also enroll in the beta program.
