The days of one console per generation are over, as companies have gotten into the habit of launching mid-cycle releases. A good example is the PS4 Pro. Well, Sony is working on a PS5 Pro, and PS5 Pro-enhanced games may be able to run at lower frame rates.

While it is very likely that Sony is currently working on this mid-cycle console, you will still want to take this news with a grain of salt. Sony has yet to officially announce this console, so we can’t officially say that the company is working on a PS5 Pro. However, trusted sources confirm that Sony is, indeed, working on another PlayStation system.

Alleged PS5 Pro-enhanced games may be able to run at 30 frames a second

Right now, we are still dealing with leaked information. However, sources close to the matter told The Verge that Sony wants a new graphical mode for games made for the PS5 Pro. The company is, reportedly, talking to developers about creating a PS5 Pro-exclusive graphical mode, but we don’t have an official name for it. However, the report says that this new mode could utilize Sony’s Playstation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling technology. This will push games up to 4K resolution with a cap of 60fps and include Ray tracing.

Well, according to a new report, it appears that Sony will also allow games enhanced with this mode to run at 30fps. So, games with locked frame rates may also be able to benefit from this upscaling technology.

The (PSSR) technology could take games running between 1080P and 1440p resolution at 30fps, and have them run between 1280p and 2160p with the same frame rate on the PS5 Pro. So, enhanced games with this graphical technology could look much better on the PS5 Pro, even at lower frame rates

Caveats

However, there are some caveats. Games that have variable resolutions, but don’t increase the peak resolution, may not get the same enhancement. The Verge gave an example of a game that runs between 1440p and 2160p variable to 1800p and 2160p variable may not be eligible for this mode.

We are still getting information about the PS5 Pro and what it could bring. Developers will need to be on Sony’s latest SDK to really utilize this new system’s capabilities. One could have the name “Ultra-boost” mode.

However, even that mode has some caveats that developers will need to keep in mind. For example, games that have not been patched may not show improvements nor would games with fixed resolution and graphical settings.

We will hopefully figure out more about this new system as time goes on.
