OLED iPad Air is coming, but not anytime soon

While we’re all still waiting on the OLED iPad Pro, which was rumored to be announced last week, we’re now hearing when the iPad Air will go OLED.

According to researcher Kong Min-Soo, “We expect the iPad Air to change to OLED in 2028, and the iPad Air will use single-stack and two-stack tandem OLED for the iPad Pro.”

So, four more years before OLED is available on the iPad Air. That should give Apple enough time to get their OLED displays to higher levels and get a cheaper price for them. That’s important for the iPad Air since the iPad Pro is rumored to get a considerable price bump – almost doubling in price – once it moves to OLED. That wouldn’t work for the iPad Air, as it’s more for those who don’t want to spend $800 on a tablet.

New iPad Air rumored to launch in Q1 2024

Now that we know the OLED iPad Air isn’t launching until 2028, or possibly later, let’s look to the immediate future. According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is slated to release two iPad Air models in the first quarter of 2024. Well, the quarter ends in about two weeks, so Apple must be getting ready to launch these any day now.

The new refreshed iPad Air would feature a bit of a design change. While they are not expected to feature mini-LED, they would get some of the benefits from using the same-spec Oxide backplane. It is also rumored that the front-facing camera moved to the long side of the iPad. Similar to the 10th Generation iPad that launched in the fall of 2022.

Last year, Apple did not release a single iPad for the first time since the iPad was announced in 2010. So, Apple is due for quite a few iPad releases. The new iPad Pro in OLED and the refreshed iPad Air are expected any day now. Both models come in 11- and 12.9-inch sizes.
