More rumors are surfacing regarding Sony’s fabled PlayStation 5 Pro, which is now being said to have the capability to deliver 4K visuals with a 120Hz frame rate. There are some things to keep in mind here with these rumors. Technically, the original PlayStation 5 offers 4K 120. However, games will generally make you choose either Quality Mode or Performance Mode. In other words, you either have to choose the better graphics or the faster frame rate.

But that won’t necessarily be the case with the PlayStation 5 Pro. It’s been rumored at least once before that Sony is going to release a more powerful version of the PlayStation 5 console with some notable upgrades. Not the least of which is some AI upscaling technology that can boost the frames per second in games and help with visual quality. According to Moore’s Law is Dead on YouTube (via Wccftech), the console refresh will come with this AI upscaling technology.

The details were part of a podcast where Moore’s Law is Dead spoke with Michael from NXGamer. During the podcast, NXGamer states that unnamed sources confirm the AI upscaling. It’s unclear how this would look exactly. But NXGamer does state that it’ll likely be similar to what NVIDIA’s DLSS technology is like. With DLSS, NVIDIA’s technology uses AI to generate frames between frames for an overall smoother result. According to the new rumor, the tech being used in the PlayStation 5 Pro has been “in the works for some time.”

Sony plans to market the PlayStation 5 Pro as a 4K 120Hz frame rate machine

In addition to the tangible benefits of this tech for the consumer, for Sony’s part, it’ll allow the company to market the PlayStation 5 Pro as a “120 FPS, 4K machine.” This marketing push could help Sony sell more of the PlayStation 5 Pro units when and if the console launches. None of these rumors have been confirmed by Sony of course. It still hasn’t officially announced a PlayStation 5 Pro nor is it likely to do so too early ahead of a potential launch. Keeping that in mind, somewhere around the Summer would make for a reasonable timeframe to expect an announcement.

Perhaps at a brand-new PlayStation Showcase. This would put an announcement a little over a few months away from the rumored release window. Which is supposed to be Holiday 2024. All that being said, NXGamer does state during the podcast that amongst all the rumors about the PlayStation 5 Pro, another thing they’ve heard is that the console is real. Something that Moore’s Law is Dead says they’ve heard as well. Even if that is the case, it’s impossible to tell at this time how much of a performance boost it would be.

It doesn’t seem like it would be as big of a boost as it was for the PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 4 Pro. But time will tell.
