Samsung has begun pushing the October 2023 security update to eligible Galaxy devices. This time, the latest foldables are the first in the line. Both Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 are currently picking up the latest security patch in the US. A global rollout will follow in the coming days, with the company simultaneously expanding the coverage to more models.

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5 get the October update in the US

As of this writing, Samsung’s October SMR (Security Maintenance Release) is only available for carrier-locked variants of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 in the US. Verizon has confirmed the rollout on its network, though the update should soon reach units on other networks as well. The new firmware build numbers for the two foldables are F946USQS1AWI3 and F731USQS1AWI3. Factory-unlocked variants will also get this update soon.

The changelog supplied by Verizon reveals that the two foldables aren’t getting anything more than the latest security fixes here. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 are relatively new to the market, so it isn’t yet time for major feature updates. The wait might end as early as next month, though. Samsung is expected to push the Android 14-based One UI 6.0 update to the foldable duo in November if not earlier.

One UI 6.0 will bring a plethora of new features and improvements to Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones and tablets. The Korean firm is currently testing the big update with public beta programs for the Galaxy S23 series and a bunch of other devices. We will let you know when the stable rollout begins. Ahead of that, users with the new foldables in the US can download a new update to safeguard their phones from more than 40 security vulnerabilities.

This update patches 46 vulnerabilities in Galaxy devices

The October SMR for Galaxy devices patches 46 security vulnerabilities. More than 30 of those are Android OS flaws, with Google classifying at least two of them as “critical” issues. The remaining flaws are labeled as “high-severity” vulnerabilities. The new update also patches 12 Galaxy-specific issues across various system apps, services, and components, including Settings.

All of these security fixes will reach a host of other Galaxy devices over the next few weeks. As usual, you will get a notification when the OTA (over the air) rollout reaches your unit. You can also manually check for updates from the Settings app. Navigate to Settings > Software update > Download and install to see if you have an update pending download.
