Google Photos is gaining a bunch of new video effects. The company has announced 12 different styles that let you make your videos “pop” with just a few taps. These effects are rolling out to Pixel users and Google One subscribers as part of the video editor function in the Photos app.

The new video effects in Google Photos appear between the Adjust and Filters tabs in the video editor. The Effects tab lets you pick from the following styles when editing videos: Dust mix, Paper tear, B&W film, Lomo, Light leak, Film mood, Chromatic, Fish eye, Vintage, Layouts, Retro film, and Poster (via).

The thumbnail for each style gives you a preview of the effect, but you can see it in action on your video by selecting the style. The effect is immediately applied to the video. You can save a copy of it or pick a different style if you don’t like it. The original video will not be affected, so you can give it another touch whenever you want.

Google Photos is readying a Magic Editor feature

The addition of new video effects is the first notable update to the built-in video editor tool in Google Photos in over two years. The feature has largely remained unchanged since March 2021. It lets you trim, crop, rotate, stabilize, add text, highlight some areas, adjust parameters like brightness, contrast, saturation, shadows, and skin tone, and add various filters to your videos.

Meanwhile, a major update for the app’s photo editor tool is on the way. Announced during Google’s I/O conference in May, the Photos app will gain a Magic Editor feature in a few months. It uses artificial intelligence to reimagine your photos like never before. It will let you make complex edits with just a tap. The feature can edit specific parts of a photo to give you the perfect shot, taking care of everything from the subject and background to the overall composition of the photo.

Google hasn’t provided a precise date for the availability of Magic Editor in Photos but confirmed that an experimental version of the feature will roll out to Pixel users later this year. While we wait for that, the app is gaining some nifty new video effects. If you’re a Pixel user or have a Google One subscription, you should be able to access these effects anytime now.
