Update: Google has reached out to inform us they are aware of the issue.  Stating “We’re aware of the issue and are rolling out a fix. The original photos are not impacted.”

Some Google Photos users have reported that their old images are “corrupted,” and yet there is no explanation for it.

Google Photos is at the top of the news these days, creating controversy for Google. The app is recently accused of violating Illinois’s Biometric Information Privacy Act. On the heels of this, Google agreed to pay $100 million to Illinois residents to settle the lawsuit. The photo sharing and storage app is now corrupting old images and damaging users’ memories.

As per the report, Google Photos users have noticed white dots, lines, and deep cracks on their old images. Some images are also suffering from blurry or distorted areas. The damaged images are usually more than five years old. Corruption is like physical water damage.

Yet, the reason behind the issue is unclear, and Google has not provided any explanation. Also, the destruction of some photos is more severe, and there is no clear pattern.

The affected users say the corruption persists even after downloading the images. Additionally, the original images are not reportedly affected, and the corruption only happened to the edited versions on the Photos app.

So far, users have raised complaints on the Google support page and Reddit. It seems that not all Google Photos are affected, and the issue has happened to a small portion of users. However, Google needs to find a solution for it. Also, in the last couple of days, the problem has reportedly been solved for some users. Since Google Photos is a key app for users to store or share their memories, the company needs to fix the issue as soon as possible.

Putting all recent controversies aside, Google Photos has recently added some useful features for users, including a new tool that makes it easier to pull out text from images.
