After Comcast, the parent company of NBCUniversal, launched Peacock. And Disney bought Fox, getting a majority ownership over Hulu, it was only a matter of time before NBC content moved off of Hulu. And Comcast even announced this earlier this year.
For many years, most NBCUniversal content would land on Hulu the day after it airs. That will continue to be true, but change Hulu for Peacock, starting on September 19. That’s just ahead of the new fall seasons for many of its popular shows.
Peacock’s president, Kelly Campbell has stated that the only thing that will change for viewers is the platform. And since Peacock is actually one of the cheaper options out there, that’s not so bad. Peacock is available for free, or you can get Peacock Premium for $5 per month which unlocks all content. Or Peacock Premium Plus (which is ad-free) for $10 per month. If you are a Comcast customer, you can get Peacock Premium for free too.
Some NBC shows will remain on Hulu
Comcast is a part owner of Hulu, and has a financial stake in the service until 2024. So unsurprisingly, some NBC content will remain on Hulu. That includes shows that have finished their runs like: This Is Us, The Mindy Project, Parenthood and others.
NBCU really wants to grow its streaming platform and it plans to do that by making Peacock the exclusive home of its IP, along with original content. Comcast has said that it is going to be doubling its expenditures on content for Peacock from $1.5 billion in 2021 to $3 billion in 2022. And that figure is expected to grow to $5 billion in the coming years.
For customers, this is going to become fairly confusing. With some NBC content remaining on Hulu and others coming to Peacock. But it does look like NBCU is looking to keep things fairly simple. New shows land on Peacock, while older shows will stay on Hulu until 2024.
