Android 9 Pie is finally rolling out to the OnePlus 3 and 3T. OnePlus’ users had a chance to try out a beta build of Android 9 Pie for the two devices, and now they can move to the stable build. This update has started rolling out, but please do note that we’re looking at a staged rollout, so you may not receive it today or tomorrow. OnePlus will push the update to a limited number of users today, and a wider rollout will begin in the next couple of days.
The OnePlus 6T ships with Android 9 Pie out of the box, while the OnePlus 5, 5T, and 6 received it a while back. That being said, both the OnePlus 3 and 3T originally shipped with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, and this the third large Android update that landed on the two devices, which is somewhat impressive.
This update arrives to the OnePlus 3 and 3T in form of OxygenOS 9.0.2, and with its, it brings Android security patch for April 2019. Considering this is a brand new version of Android we’re looking at here, you’ll be seeing quite a few changes in the OS, even though the general design and functionality did not change much compared to Android 8.0 Oreo.
This update brings a brand new overview menu to the device, you will now be required to scroll horizontally, not vertically in order to multitask, while Android 9 Pie’s navigation is also available in the settings, if you prefer it to on-screen buttons or OnePlus’ navigation gestures.
Adaptive Battery and Adaptive Brightness are also included in this update, and the same can be said for both App Actions and Slices. Security has been boosted in Android 9 Pie, while the Accessibility Menu has also seen some changes here. Android 9 Pie also brings easier text selection to the table, and so on.
OnePlus didn’t really list any of these changes in its official changelog (well, it did, under “brand new UI for Android Pie”), as these are all Android 9 Pie changes from Google, the company did, however, note what changes does OxygenOS itself brings to the table.
OxygenOS 9.0.2 brings some new options to the Do Not Disturb mode, as it allows you to customize the time range. Gaming Mode 3.0 is also a part of this update, as it allows for a notification for 3rd party calls, and it now supports displaying text content of the heads up notifications.
OnePlus’ dialer now supports Google Duo, while OnePlus’ Camera app has received support for Google Lens in order to provide you with image recognition. On top of all that, the company has also listed “general bug fixes and improvements” in the changelog, as per usual.
This update is rolling out OTA (Over The Air), and the device will notify you once it’s available, unless you disabled that option, of course. We’re still not sure how large the update is, but considering this is a completely brand new version of Android, we’re presuming that you will be dealing with several hundred MB of data, so it is recommended that you’re connected to a WiFi network before you proceed.
