ZTE’s rumored Axon M smartphone has recently received a certification from the Wi-Fi Alliance, suggesting that the phone is nearing its commercial debut after it was also recently certified by the Federal Communications Commission in the U.S. The smartphone bears the model number Z999 and runs Android 7.1.2 Nougat, according to its Wi-Fi Alliance listing dated August 16th. Some industry watchers previously speculated that the phone will be officially announced by ZTE on October 17th when the company is scheduled to hold a new product event in New York City.
The certification from Wi-Fi Alliance includes a few pieces of information regarding the upcoming Axon M such as support for both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi network frequencies, which should come as good news for those who use dual-band and tri-band routers. However, the Wi-Fi listing does not reveal many details about the hardware and other software of the device, as is usually the case with the WFA’s certificates. It also remains unclear in which territories the phone will be made available by the Chinese original equipment manufacturer, though it is likely that it will be launched in its home country, as well as the United States. While not much is known about the upcoming Axon M, a recent benchmark that appeared on Geekbench in August possibly revealed some details about the features and specs of the device. For example, the benchmark revealed a ZTE device bearing the same model number was identified as sporting a quad-core Snapdragon SoC clocked at 2.0GHz. It also showed that the device would come with 4GB RAM, indicating that the handset will either compete in the upper mid-range or possibly even flagship market segment.
Recent rumors also suggested that the phone will come equipped with two separate screens supported by a hinge, meaning that the device could be ZTE’s rumored foldable phone that would become the first device of its kind to ever hit the market. The two displays are said to have a resolution of 2,160 by 1,920 pixels when the phone is folded out completely and has them act as a single screen with a 6.8-inch diagonal which would allow the device to compete with both smartphones and tablets.
