Google Translate On Marshmallow Brings In-App Translations

For those that missed it, yesterday brought with it some big news. Marshmallow sized news as yesterday was the day in which Google formally announced the latest version of the Android operating system, Android 6.0 (Marshmallow). As such, the announcement also came with the news that the source code was being pushed to the AOSP and that the factory images for Marshmallow had been posted and were ready for download. As well as the news that the OTA for certain Nexus devices were also beginning yesterday. If you have one of the relative devices and have not received the OTA yet, then it is worth keeping in mind that this is a staggered roll out so it could take a couple of days.

Well, the update will bring with it a few notable new features like Now on Tap and the battery saving, Doze. However, Google has now today announced another new feature that Android 6.0 users can make use of. The new feature is related to the Google Translate app and means that users will be able to translate content from a number of third party apps. Although, a full list of compatible apps were not provided, Google did specifically namedrop the likes of TripAdvisor, WhatsApp and LinkedIn.

As a result, when in any of these apps and you encounter text in another language. You can simply highlight the text and once highlighted, the small menu icon will offer the option to translate. This also means that you can translate content to another language for sending out to someone as well and by using the same method. In fact, the images below and provided by Google, highlights how the new feature will work. For those interested, the announcement does state that this only will work with Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) with no clear indications if it will be compatible with Android 5.x (Lollipop) or older. For those running Android 6.0 already or expected to soon, then Google notes that the feature will begin rolling out to the Google Translate app beginning this week. As with any update like this, it might take a couple of extra days to reach your Android 6.0 running device.
