Moto X 2013 Lollipop 5.1 OTA Begins For Multiple Models

The original Motorola Moto X came out in 2013, and while many users probably knew it would be a lengthier wait for the update to Android Lollipop, they knew it was a good chance it would like be coming to their devices, it was all just a matter of when. Over the last couple of weeks Motorola began soak testing the Android 5.1 Lollipop software in Brazil, the U.S. and Canada to see how the devices would handle the build of the software which Motorola had put together, and it was mentioned that if all things went well, the official over-the-air update should begin rolling out sometime in the near future. This is exactly the message Motorola’s David Schuster sent out when he announced soak testing for the U.S. model back on the 11th of June.

Just about right on schedule, it would seem that everything with the soak tests went well as Schuster has taken to Google+ once again to announce the official rollout of the OTA for Android 5.1 Lollipop for the original Moto X from 2013. Before everyone gets excited, it’s worth noting this is an OTA that is limited to a specific set of devices at the moment and it won’t be rolling out to all models across all carriers or regions, not yet. For the time being the OTA for 5.1 Lollipop is only rolling out to unlocked Moto X models in the U.S. and Brazil, as well as the Rogers model of the Moto X in Canada.

Considering this, for users who have any of these models, it could still be days before they get the update on their device as software updates tend to happen in staggered rollouts, meaning not everyone will be getting the update today. Now that the OTA has begun though users can probably expect it rather quickly. 5.1 Lollipop isn’t a huge update, and contains minor adjustments to the software along with some bug fixes and improvements, so users shouldn’t be expecting a large update file to download. The unfortunate thing here is that carrier models are still waiting, and there’s no time frame for when the software will roll out as the carriers have to test it before they push.
