Every month there are always stats released advising of the current trends, performances and changes in the tech domain. Last week we reported on Android still dominating the mobile device operating system (OS) with 51.5% of the US market despite incurring a small decline from the previous quarter (down from 52.5%). With Android reigning supreme it is always worth knowing the make-up of that supremacy as this can show a greater level of detail (and understanding) about the ‘current’ status of Android. Now September is here we can bring you some more details on the actual distribution of Android itself. Google collects this information by counting the number of devices running a specific version of Android and the figures below refer to September which covers a seven day counting period which ended on September 9th. Google do stipulate that only versions of Android 2.2 and upwards are included in the overall figures although also note Android versions below 2.2 accounts for less than 1%.
As to be expected the newest version of Android, KitKat (Android 4.4) is continuing to grow and at a fairly substantial rate. For September the number of devices running Android stood at 24.5% which is a significant increase from August (20.9%). With almost a 4% jump it is less surprising that Jelly bean – JB (Android 4.1-4.3) fell to 53.8%. In fairness, this was only a small drop when considering August’s figure was 54.2%. Similar to Jelly Bean, Ice Cream Sandwich – ICS (Android 4.0.3/4.0.4) also dropped over the month from 10.6% down to 9.6%. Continuing the trend Gingerbread also slumped (and slightly more so then JB and ICS) from 13.6% down to 11.4% for September. Out of all of the versions of Android noted only Froyo (Android 2.2) maintained its level with a 0.7% share.
So there you have it. Not only is Android supreme, but Jelly Bean remains at the top of the tree with the highest number of devices using the platform. However, Jellybean should be ready as KitKat is fast approaching and with the highly awaited Android L on route it’s only a matter of time before there is a new Android King in town.
