Better than expected...
5 out of 5 stars
Better than expected...
I wasn't expecting a lot from this guitar. I should say that I did get the GearIT Sunset (LP style) and was not at all disappointed. This guitar is not really the style I would normally want. Something came over me and I decided I needed to check it out. I was expected to have to send it back, since Amazon had posted a "frequently returned item" notice.I did not return it.I haven't pulled the pick guard yet because I actually like the strings that came with the Shoreline. I looked everything else over. There are plenty of cosmetic imperfections that are very difficult to find and see, but they are there. The only such imperfections are in the form of very small impressions in the wood. There are no actual dings or scratches. The paint is good.I was surprised by the push/pull knob for the coil split. VERY smooth up and down movement. The knobs are metal, not plastic. You can feel it is a cheaper grade of metal, but still a nice touch. The bridge does have an issue. The saddle screws will rattle, especially if you pick or strum hard. The milling is off, either the screws or the saddles themselves, making the hole slightly large for the screws. The result is that they can move within the saddle. I did not dock any stars for this because the bridge is otherwise fine and for a sub-$100 guitar (at the time of purchase), they provided a functional bridge that, frankly, only amplifies what would be a normal characteristic of a Tele guitar anyway, namely, that kind of jangly, spanky sound. About the worst I could say is, it could be just a little less Tele sounding, but not really a problem for me at all. For some, I could see where it could be a problem and you may want to replace the bridge with something similar but better. Fairly easy and inexpensive upgrade. Personally, I like differences in guitars. Not just cosmetic, but structurally speaking. I Like that some of my guitars cause me to have to approach my playing differently. It keeps playing guitar fresh for me. In the case of the Shoreline, I have to apply some self-discipline and approach it with a lighter touch when it comes to picking and strumming. Not everyone feels this way, so this may understandably be a problem for some.Fretwork is great. No dead frets and the fret ends are all polished. No sprout or sharp ends whatsoever. That actually surprised me because of the price point. The fretboard is lacquered, which does help with preventing fret sprout by preventing the board from drying out and then shrinking. If you prefer an unfinished fretboard (fingerboard), keep that in mind. The guitar holds tune very well. It has decent Faux vintage style tuners. All 6 on mine hold tune and none of them feel gritty or sloppy. I know that this in particular can vary from guitar to guitar depending on QC, so your mileage may vary. They were installed unevenly, so the look isn't great on the back of the headstock, but this doesn't affect tuning stability. I would also note that although the tuners are fine now, over time they will very possibly start to become looser and sloppier. Being vintage tuners, there are no button screws to tighten, so they'll need to be replaced. Not a difficult or expensive fix. Something even a beginner might benefit from learning how to do.The 3-way switch is pretty cool. Very retro. Very quiet. Works well. The volume pot has VERY good taper. It is not at all an on/off situation. You can hear the difference in volume as you turn the knob right from the beginning. The tone pot is a little harder to tell without putting a meter on it, but it is not on/off. Maybe a little less taper than the volume, but there is still decent variance. The Shoreline is heavy. Even being a semi hollow, it has a thick body and therefor weighs quite a bit. This might be a downside for a young beginner. Or it could be excellent for building up those world tour muscles. The pickups sound very good to me. They are loud and bright. The humbucker has plenty of output but can easily be tamed. It has a coil split. The split does not affect the tone as dramatically as you might expect, but it does invoke more of a single coil sound. The P90 in the neck position sounds really good to me. I have no desire to replace either, but pickup sound is subjective. You might disagree with my assessment, but I really like both of these pickups. The gig back is ok. It has a little padding and will certainly make it easier to transport for lessons etc. It's better than the dust-cover type bags. The "case candy" that comes with it is ok. It makes it possible to start right away if you have an amp (or even if you don't). Picks, thin strap, clip-on digital tuner, extra set of strings and an output cable that is actually decent and better than the usual ones that come with guitars. All can be upgraded to better versions later on.Bottom line: If you don't mind heavy guitars and the tele appeals to you, you should check this one out. Just keep the weight and jangly bridge in mind.

I picked this up for $81 when they were on sale at rock bottom and wasn't sure what to expect. Lots of video reviews out there that are all over the place. It just arrived and first thing out of the box is the top is so pretty I can almost live with the goofy headstock shape, which actually isn't as ugly in person as it appears in photos!
I still might re-shape the headstock... I am just so stunned at how GORGEOUS this thing is otherwise, that Imma little giddy at the overall appearance probably. One of the prettiest sunburst tops with amazing figuring I have ever seen, regardless of price. Hands down. Neck is beautiful as well. There's something about a maple neck with ball end frets that just looks clean and precise...
Cosmetics aside, let's get to the nitty gritty. For a beginner it is perfectly acceptable out of the box. Nothing "wrong" in terms of it plays fine, everything works as it should, and once the strings are stretched it holds tune just fine. You could give this to a kid as a first guitar and they would be receiving a perfectly functioning musical instrument.
Having said that, for those who are somewhere beyond being a beginner, it needs a proper setup. No surprise for a guitar in this price range. The action is slightly high at the higher frets and the intonation is sort of close, but only sort of if you have a decent ear. Still, big deal. I didn't expect that a master tech would prepare it for me at this price. Even at the full price it's supposed to list for I would expect a setup to be necessary.
Have not checked relief, but it's a bolt on neck. Set the relief if need be, adjust the bridge saddle heights, and if need be shim the neck to put the action where it should be. I expect it probably simply needs the relief checked and the bridge saddle heights set, and shimming will probably not be necessary from my cursory initial look at things. A straight edge on the neck suggests the neck itself is just fine as is, but the bridge saddles are definitely high. Big deal!
Again, we are talking about a budget guitar, not picking apart something from a custom shop. What else?
Some people have reported problems with consistent volume from pickup to pickup when using the coil split. It does seem to have SLIGHTLY lower volume in the middle position when the coil split is engaged, but I mean... not anything crazy terrible, and not anything I probably would have noticed if not for all the people who reported it as an "issue"... it's fine...
The pickup heights and pole pieces need to be adjusted. Again, as one would expect on a new guitar, and esp in this price range. But even as is, and with the protective plastic still on the pickups, the range of tonalities on tap is pretty cool. No complaints, some pleasant surprises, and who knows? With heights and pole pieces adjusted maybe that "volume discrepency" in the middle position with coil taps engaged will go away completely?
Again though, who cares? If you're going to pick apart this thing based upon tiny things in comparison to more expensive guitars you're missing the point.
Overall, first impression out of the box is it's pretty, -No, the F-hole is not bound but for this price the fact that the body IS bound, -and the body binding is flawless by the way, -is impressive in itself! Second impression out of the box is it plays fine but experienced players will want to change strings and do a proper setup, and then I have every expectation it will be a great player. Third impression is that for the price, the accessory bag is pretty dope.
What do you want for a budget guitar? Add in strict QC on the setup and binding on the F-Hole and the price is going to go up!
...I just wish the Chinese could wrap their heads around the idea of doing headstocks that aren't so funky and fugly...
She's a keeper anyway! I can love this beauty! despite the fact she has six toes! Five stars is factoring in the price point. No it's not a five star guitar compared to something that goes for three grand, but I've seen guitars going for five hundred or even more that will never be as good as I know this thing will be after a good setup.
It's fine.

So far this is what I've gathered.

The guitar build and quality is top tier and I have not seen any cheap guitars at this price be as sturdy or well made. It's extremely beautiful. Although a p-90/Humbucker configuration is unique it offers alot to the player in terms of style and able to blend through genres. And having a coil split makes this worth even more than the typical guitar. And vintage style tuners is also a wild thing I don't see normally ever!

Got this is surf green and it is gorgeous. Volume and tone roll off nicely, and the neck is so solid and gorgeously done! It's a darker maple than I'd normally get but I dig it no lie. Also the guitar is on the heavier side. No complaint there but to some or to most beginners that'll be uncomfortable

The extra stuff it comes with is very good! It came with
Strap
Tuner
Pics
Cable
Strings
And gig bag.

The things to use in emergency or just straight up replace would be strings and pics and strap. the strings have no info on them about gauge or anything pretty much a second pack of factory strings 🤮
Pics are flimsy and only people who play in light picks may like them but they already wearing down.
Unless your cool with just the one it came with I'd get a new one as all in one pack straps tends to wear fast overtime.

The tuner and gig back are solid and I can really rely on these two things. Though I have a floor tuner the tuner will come in handy when I need it most! And the gig bag is made well!
The cable is also made very well and it's thick so it's not flimsy.

Though for what you.pay I don't have any room to complain about any thing truly. It's a gorgeous and well made guitar especially.at the price point it's at!

All right, how much guitar can you get these days for ~$75? Quite a bit, as it turns out.

Pros:
- Ball end, nicely polished frets. The fret work on this guy is pretty nice, and the rounded over fret ends are very pleasing to the hand. No high frets when checked with a rocker.
- Well cut nut. This is usually a fail point for budget guitars, but this is very close, and certainly playable as is. Just needs tiny adjustments.
- Fit and Finish. I'm a sucker for 3TS with binding, so the body finish is right in my wheelhouse. The neck is very glossy, OK if that's your preference, I will knock the shine down with a gray Scotch Brite for a nicer feel. "Vintage" coloring on the neck, which means a fairly unconvincing light orange masquerading as amber. Not too obstreperous, though. Only issue I found was a slight depression on the lower horn that will be an easy drop fill with CA glue, although it is hardly noticeable as is. This is a very nice looking guitar.
- Pickups and Electronics. The humbucker is a little barky sounding, but OK overall. Coil split switch doesn't do much, but they never do. The P-90 is nice and snarly, mellows out nicely when rolling back the volume. Tone control actually changes the tone significantly, another common fail point on budget guitars.
- Nice accessory package. Spare strings, strap, cord, tuner, picks and a decent gig bag. And the strings don't turn your fingers black in 5 minutes like many of the Chinese imports.

Cons:

-Tuning machines. While they are by no means bad, they could be better. They are knock off Klusons, and could definitely hold tune a little better. And if you are going to knock off Klusons, then go whole hog and copy the split posts as well, so much more convenient for string changes.
- Top loading bridge. I know, I know, you've got to give up something to get the price down, and in this case they opted out of the much superior through hole design. String changes on a top-loader with these bent steel saddles can get frustrating, until you get a feel for how to pre-bend the string end. But this is a pretty minor complaint, just makes it a skoche less convenient when changing strings.

I'm very impressed by the guitar, not quite so impressed with the packing job by Amazon. GearIT uses the smaller triangle style shipping box, with some strips of closed cell foam around the most vulnerable impact points. And they work pretty well, as when it was packaged for shipment, they just chucked it into a huge box (honestly, big enough for at least 2 and maybe 3 of the guitars) and neglected to add any kind of internal packaging. When I pulled it in off the porch, the smaller box was banging around loose inside the larger box, and I thought "here we go." But somehow it made it through unscathed, so either Amazon knows what they're doing, or we got lucky, hmmm?

Look, at the end of the day, it's a budget guitar, but it's really a very nice budget guitar. You're getting a LOT for your money with one of these. I will keep an eye out for future GearIT styles, maybe they can swing a budget SG or ??? next time?
