After a long wait, we finally have another solo album from the famously reluctant lead singer of British band, Portishead. The album is cohesive, and it sounds like a concept album. It's about ageing and letting go of all the things that at one time we attached values to and now know better. Beth, now in her 60s, knows it all too well. The songs are all marvelous, and wonderfully produced. All the songs are either written by her or co-written with her. Her voice is absolutely gorgeous and ethereal. If you liked her first solo album and her work with Portishead, you would love this release too.

„Lives Outgrown“ nimmt einen sofort gefangen und lässt einen die zu lange Zeit ohne Neues von Beth Gibbons sofort vergessen. Auch wenn es viele ungewohnte Hörmomente gibt wie zum Beispiel in „Burden of Life“ oder auch in „Rewind“, fühlt man sich sofort heimisch auf dem neuen Soloalbum. Es knüpft nahezu unvermittelt an „Out of season“ an. Was allein schon an ihrer Stimme liegt. Es scheint, als liege alle Last der Welt auf ihren Schultern, als wäre sie die Stimme all der Vergessenen und leise vor sich leidenden Menschen. Und die Musik, bis auf wenige gewollte Brüche, wie in den vorab genannten Songs, kommt ohne viel Brimborium aus, ihre Stimme und eine dezente Untermalung von Gitarren und was auch immer hier zur Anwendung kommt. Wenig erinnert an Portishead.
Die Vorabsingle „Floating on a moment” ging sofort ins Ohr und kam dort nicht mehr heraus. Einfühlsam, einprägsam singt Beth Gibbons, fragil musikalisch untermalt und doch kraftvoll, sie scheint dem Zuhörer, auch wenn er nicht verstehen mag, worüber sie singt, Kraft zu geben, sie reicht ihre Hand und gibt einem so das Gefühl, man ist nicht allein.
„Lives Outgrown“ erzählt ungeschönt vom Leben, vom Sterben, dass ihm zwangsläufig innewohnt, von Schmerz, von Vergangenheit und Zukunft. Beth Gibbons gibt nicht vor, Lösungen zu wissen und zu präsentieren. Vielmehr teilt sie das wenige, was sie weiß und was sie hat, mit ihren Zuhörern. Die Grundstimmung dieses Albums ähnelt sehr der von „Out of season“, zart und fragil und dennoch kraftvoll. Streicher sind hier zu hören, aber auch mal Trommeln und es soll auch viel ungewöhnliches Instrumentarium bespielt worden sein, fast könnte man meinen, die Einstürzenden Neubauten hätten Pate gestanden. „Burden of life“ ist so ein Beispiel. „Lost changes“ hingegen ist ein wunderbarer Song, so einfühlsam, so wunderbar, dass er wie „Floating on a moment“ in Dauerschleife laufen könnte. Schade, dass Beth Gibbons sich musikalisch so rar gemacht hat. Auch wenn ihre Musik keine lustige Partymucke ist, geht es einem nach dem Hören dieser großartigen Songs wesentlich besser. Sie kommuniziert weniger über die Sprache als über ihren Gesang und ihre Musik. Das ganze Album strahlt eine Ruhe aus und nimmt einen gefangen und lässt nicht mehr los. Solche Musik sollte es viel mehr geben. Ohne viel Schnick schnack, real und handgemacht und ehrlich. Das ist es, was dieses Album ausmacht. Es haut einen um wie seinerzeit auch „Dummy“ von Portishead, bei der sie ja bekanntermaßen die Stimme ist. schön, dass es auch in 2024 noch solche Musik gibt und solche Stimmen. Und Menschen wie Beth Gibbons, die einem eben das Gefühl geben, nicht allein zu sein in all dem Elend dieser Welt und dem Älterwerden. Für mich jedenfalls ist „Lives Outgrown“ bisher das Album des Jahres und dürfte schwer zu toppen sein.
