This is the final chapter in the Trails of Cold Steel quadrilogy. If you've played the other three, then you have to play this one and finish the story. I won't lie, the third and fourth games aren't quite as strong as the first two but are both still a fun play and still have pretty good if not quite as good mechanics. A must play for those fans of the first 3.

For many jRPG and RPG, such as myself, it doesn’t take much research into Falcolm’s signature series to realize that the most prominent, as well as their most resource intensive franchise is referred to as: “The Legend of Heroes,” or just “Trails” for short, is well worth the $40-$60 per that each game costs; but it is also one of the most demanding jRPG series to ever make it onto the international stage, at least when it comes to each arc’s rhythmic storytelling from one game to the next, and from one country to the next as new fans usually attempt to play the series in chronological order.

At the moment, the fourth and final arc, allegedly, is progressing extremely smoothly in Japan where the second installment is expected to be released this year.

In all, we have: “Trails from/of [Sky, Azure and Zero, Cold Steel,” the much anticipated ”Trails of Reverie,” and the final arc known as “Kuro No Kiseki/Trails in the Dark (once localized). Sadly, North American consumers will find their selection limited to pretty much just the Trails of Sky game installments on PC, and the Trails of Cold Steel I-IV games on PS4/PS5, and Nintendo Switch (CS III and IV only).

Most guides would advise playing halfway through the Cold Steel Arc, followed by the Trails in the Sky trilogy, the Crossbell game duo (from Azure and To Zero), and finally finish the series with Cold Steel III and IV before moving on to Reverie and the Calvard Republic’s own stories.

Sadly, all Trails of Cold Steel entries are superior to Trials in the Sky, while the remaining games undergoing localization efforts still precede what is currently playable in Cold Steel III and IV. Personally, I found my entry into Cold Steel to be as enjoyable at the beginning as it was in the end. The same could not be said for the second and third chapters of the Lkerlian arc however.

For obvious reasons, the finale in CS4 points to our the immediate future where Calvard is becoming more and . and neighboring

This has been a wonderful conclusion to the arc, though Hajimari no Kiseki ties everything together very well after this. The game has some minor spelling or spacing errors but is otherwise fine. Play the first 3 in the series before this, and try to play Hajimari afterward.

I was I introduced to the Legend of Heroes in the Trails of Sky era. To see all of the culminate in this game is an amazing conclusion. You’re doing yourself a disservice if you play this without at least playing all three previous games and at least ONE of the earlier series (Sky, Crossbell). Characterization is amazing, battle system is updated and fluid, and yes there are some ovipis tropes and “dun dun dun” moments, but overall solid. Btw - Fie best girl.

Improves upon the systems from III and adds some mini games, trial chest, all kinda stuff. It's pure fan service, involving characters from both the Liberl and Crossbell arcs.

Also Duvalie is best girl. Any other opinion is wrong.

My new favorite jrpg of all time it personally beats out persona and final fantasy in my book if your looking for a jrpg with on those levels try trails out it's a slow bun about half way through the first game but then things pick up quick after that

Kiseki is by far my favorite game series of all time, but Cold Steel is flawed. They're too tropey and noncommital with character deaths for the story of CS to actually matter. Go back and give Zero and Azure a chance, though!

The game is perhaps a little longer than it needs to be, and it drags a little in the middle, but Trails of Cold Steel 4 provides a solid conclusion to not just the Cold Steel arc but other arcs in the larger Trails series. I don't really recommend this game to anyone who hasn't at least played the previous three Trails of Cold Steel games.
