A practical and heartfelt guide to cultivating a community, online or IRL.

Although communities feel magical, they don’t come together by magic.
Get Together is a practical and heartfelt guide to cultivating a community. Whether starting a run crew, connecting with fans online, or sparking a movement of K–12 teachers, the secret to getting people together is this: build your community with people, not for them.

In
Get Together, Bailey Richardson, Kevin Huynh, and Kai Elmer Sotto of People & Company share true stories of everyday people who have created thriving communities, both in person and online. They provide clear steps to untangle the challenge of getting passionate people together, helping individuals and organizations navigate the intricacies of leading a community, including:
  • How to rally the first people
  • How to get people talking
  • How to attract new, authentic folks
  • How to develop leaders and expand globally.
The People & Company team reminds us that we each hold the potential to spark a community. Get Together shows readers that if we join forces—as company and customers, artist and fans, organizer and advocates—we’ll do more together than we ever could alone.

From the preface

Nearly every challenge of building a community can be met by asking yourself, “How do I achieve this by working with my people, not doing it for them?” In other words, approach community-building as progressive acts of collaboration—doing more with others every step of the way.

The throughline of our book is this simple concept: “build with.” It lives in each of the recommendations we make as we take you through three stages of building a community: sparking the flame, stoking the fire, and passing the torch.

Remember: the community you crave won’t form without someone willing to take the first step. And, as is true when you build a fire, there’s an order of operations you can follow to cultivate communities that burn bright. We wrote this handbook to guide you on that journey. You can spark a community. Don’t sit back and wait for one to appear. You’re the difference.

Let’s get started.

This book is a beautiful blend of creativity, knowledge, and practical guidance. It’s a must-read for anyone who’s working to bring people together, whether in work or life. The beautiful photograph, easy-to-parse diagrams, and direct yet detailed writing makes it easy to devour this book, yet you also want to take the time to let each nugget and insight sink in. Will likely re-read until the pages are creased. Citing historical examples and research (eg. Putnam), the authors’ support their recommendation with meaningful data and science. By diving into case studies of different communities and leaders, they provide inspiration and detailed examples of inspiring communities and leaders. For example, learning about the “Potheads” Instant Pot community was a great demonstration of how the right communication style and channel makes a meaningful difference in how community members engage. Cover-to-cover, this book was a delight to read and deeply inspiring. Whether you work at a startup or a larger company, a non-profit or a for-profit organization, this is a helpful read. If you care about human interaction and how to build, kindle, and grow communities of people - read this book! It’s straight fire.

I know you can't judge a book by its cover, but you can certainly appreciate the aesthetics and this is well done: beautiful colors on the cover, repeating the gradient on the fore-edges, echoing the red in the binding stitches. If that sort of thing makes you happy, this will.

I have worked with various communities over several decades to build programs and organizations. I'm a big believer in the power of community to enhance whatever experience you are trying to achieve, and I was interested in whether this book would add value. Absolutely! I found the Stoke the Fire section really helpful. I have come away thinking about my communities, why they are successful and how they could be more so.

The stories in this book are broad enough to be relatable to most, and the format can be a useful game plan. It's inspiring!

This book is a truly excellent resource for people who are starting out in their community building journey. If you're new to community work, or you've been doing it for a little while and looking for more guidance and structure around how you approach things, then I can highly recommend this book.

If you've been working in community for some time and already have a decent grasp of how things work, then this book certainly has some good reminders and some really excellent case studies, but there isn't too much more beyond that.

The Get Together podcast associated with this book is solid as well and definitely worth checking out as a supplemental resource.

Will be recommending this book to anyone working with people - which is pretty much all of us. It’s challenging at a philosophical level, but a smooth and enjoyable read.

Whether you’re a soloprenuer or a corporate manager, this book is a reminder to reconnect WITH people. That leadership is about creating space for, listening to and empowering others and that magic happens when humans come together to do things they are passionate about.

The questions and worksheets in this book are deceptively deep. They helped me clarify and focus my efforts as I started a new business. Thank you Kevin, Bailey & Kai for sharing your insights and the stories of so many inspiring leaders with the world in this book!

P.S. the physical book is quite possibly the most gorgeous piece of graphic design I own. You should buy the hardcover just so you can hold it and feel those gorgeous pages!

The book includes many examples -- the majority are either communities that started locally in-person and/or are fan communities. There are some useful ideas that I will carry forward in my community work. If you are buying several community building/management books, this is worth including. However, especially if you are primarily interested in online, large company-sponsored communities (particularly in the technology sector), or are looking to go really deep with community management as I am...don't make this your first purchase to get your community journey moving.

As a professional community strategist, I had high hopes for the book after a stimulating and exciting chat with one of the authors. Even with high expectations, I was totally blown away.

One of the biggest challenges I face is that the community industry is so new and dynamically evolving that I have to be creative on how I explain what I do and why it's important. This book is the perfect antidote. Even better – it shows, not tells. All of the strategies they suggest are what I teach in my consultancy practice and/or observe in highly successful communities. All tried and true methods that will give you a simple, analytical, empathetic, and effective approach to building your community. There are a lot of books out there on how to find your tribe or the importance of community, but this is by far the most helpful in terms of tactical advice. This book validates the industry and practices in so many ways and I am immensely grateful.

Whether you are a budding startup, an event producer, a social butterfly, or anyone who likes to connect people in unforgettable and sustainable ways, definitely give this book a read.

Couldn't put this book down. It arrived, I opened it, and then I was glued to the pages. The moment I pulled my face from the book, I went online and created a Meetup group for a passion I have always been wanting to fulfill. I am not even kidding. The message is clear, the steps are clear. This book gives great stories, asks the right questions and provides a framework for surrounding yourself with the right people that will help you succeed in anything you want to do.

Moreover, as one who sees the world around him full of people pulling away from each other, we need these ideas to be spread that community matters more than ever and that humanity is nothing without the deep connections we create with each other.

this is a very well-written book about building a community. It's full of insights and easy to read.

The most important thing I liked, is that it has a homework page after each chapter. I know most of us won't fill it out, but for me, just having these pages with questions helps me get a quick summary of the chapter after a while and the questions have prompted my thinking to develop various ideas and consider them for my business.

I'm building a mastermind and I think it's a great read for anyone who is looking for a new way to get clients and build a business. Thanks

I picked up this book not knowing the first thing about community building. All I knew was this was a popular read on the topic. With that in mind, I’m really glad with the material.

I like the stepped approach which aligns with how your community evolves over time. There are great examples in the book and good actionable advice. I’m also a fan of the summary checklist at the end of each chapter.
