Product Description

Atari is celebrating its 50th anniversary, and with it the spark that launched the modern video game industry. It has been five decades since a small team in Silicon Valley combined their creativity, curiosity and passion into making video games and hardware. The result of their efforts was Atari, one of the most recognizable and enduring entertainment and pop culture brands in the world. Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration is an interactive journey through 50 years of video games through interviews with designers, developers and industry leaders, documentary footage, product design documents, and of course, more than 100 playable games. Atari 50: Steelbook Edition is a limited collectorยดs edition that includes the game housed in an exclusive golden and black steelbook, and includes an exclusive poster created just for the occasion. At the heart of the 50th Anniversary Collection is a curated list of over 100 games that span seven different hardware platforms โ€“ a true feat of emulation by the team at Digital Eclipse. Behind every game are the stories of Atari, what was happening at the company, what went into the creation of the games and the hardware they ran on โ€ฆ told by the people who were there. It is a rare opportunity to get a rich, behind the scenes look at the history of video games. The talented team at Digital Eclipse also created six new games that revisit, mash-up and re-envision Atari Classics.

Awesome collection of games BUT
5 out of 5 stars
Awesome collection of games BUT
Awesome collection of games and content. The case looks really nice too but the slip cover is really tight! Took nearly 5 minutes to get the slip cover off without tearing, ripping or bending it. Probably not a good idea to continue taking it off and putting it on because itโ€™s differently going to rip and or tear.

First off Kudos to the software directors/ designers, that really went all out to capture the history of Atari, via a very well thought out branching menu system that includes great interactivity and embedded historical videos, nostalgic stories and interview clips.

The cool thing here is that the games library somewhat differs from the prior released 150 game collection from 3 years ago (which was also very good due to the sheer amount of games)โ€ฆ..and the reimagined games are pretty damn good (dare I say, a step up from the originals). The steel book is very cool looking with its gold sheen. The whole package is a great homage to my childhood. Well done.

It would have been cool if they included an original Atari game booklet/manual that summarized the games in the collection, but I guess Iโ€™ll take the nostalgic poster they provided, even though it is something you canโ€™t put on the wallโ€ฆ.. Not a big fan of folded posters that crease.

Great presentation and lots of interesting interviews are a highlight of this collection. Unlockable games (even if they arenโ€™t much to write home about) are mostly rewards for checking out the new reimagined games made by Digital Eclipse themselves. The games here are mostly your standard fare for Atari collections, but there are some gems here, including unreleased prototypes and a brand new release also made by Digital Eclipse and using the concepts from the original designer (SwordQuest: Airworld)

Iโ€™m especially happy for the small but generally good selection of Lynx and Jaguar games. If youโ€™re an Atari fan or just a fan of learning about the industry and its history, I cannot recommend this enough.

As a note: Yes, the slipcover was very difficult to get off, but I managed to get it off without damaging the steelbook or the slip cover. Take your time and be patient with it.

Atari 50 was crafted with love for all things Atari. It's a game collection, museum, and treasure hunt. The interviews are great and include such Atari icons as David Crane and Howard Scott Warshaw. The Steelbook edition adds that extra touch of class, though the only thing added to the package is a poster. If you are an Atari fan or are curious about Atari, do yourself a favor and pick up this game on your favorite gaming platform. You won't be sorry.

Overall the product looks great, and the overall game is better than I anticipated (I honestly had low expectations).
The slip cover, as others have stated, is created with literally 0 tolerance. It actually arrived partially damaged/warped along edges due to how much of a stranglehold it has on the steelbook. Definitely will break if you try to keep it on the case and remove it when you want to play the game. An absolute shame really, it's like they didn't measure properly/plan for that small amount of wriggle room it needs, and then decided to just not correct it when they realized the error and just shoved it on still.

I love this! I was an Intellivision kid in the late 70's and most of the 80's but I still dabbled in Atari. This is a masterpiece of Atari history. People complain about the games and packaging but it's a minor gripe of mine. I know game selection is effected by copyrights, but the cardboard wrap on the steel book is definitely a sore spot for collectors. I knew this issue when buying and my plan worked great. After removing the cellophane I carefully separated the cardboard at the glue flap. It separated nicely and undamaged. I then used some new glue and loosely wrapped the steel book to glue the flaps back together. You'd never know it was modified and I can easily slide the sleeve off.

Despite the special edition only including a steel book and poster, I still think it's worth the tiny bit of extra cash. The steel book makes the game feel premium and like a momentous occasion. The game itself is excellent, and Its probably the best game compilation I've ever seen. I cannot reccomend this enough, Atari went above and beyond with the 50th collection, well worth the money.

Let me get this out of the way since others are whining about it-- the cardboard cover takes a lot of effort to remove. Hit the gym, folks. Now on to the actual game.

This isn't your average Atari compilation. The virtual history museum is great with many virtual exhibits to explore. The game selection includes some of the best, or at least some unique, game offerings from all of the various systems. Playing Ninja Golf on the go is awesome. But it is the "reimagined" games that really stand out for me. I've been addicted to the reimagined Breakout game so far.

There are some differences between this compilation and the Atari Flashback Classics release:

1. There are more total games in the Flashback collection but the Atari 50 has games for the 7800, 800, Lynx and Jaguar.
2. The Flashback collection doesn't have a virtual museum or reimagined games.
3. There are some differences in how you make in-game selections. For example, Flashback has a "virtual console" for the 2600 where the buttons on the joy-con correspond to the console, while the Atari 50 seems to lack that virtual console feature. If you go from the Flashback game to this one, that may take a little readjustment.
4. It seems some games that used the touch screen in the Flashback console don't use the touch screen in Atari 50.

The virtual museum, the reimagined games, and the ability to play 800, 7800, Lynx, and Jaguar games makes this worth the price of admission and separates it from the Flashback version, so if you're an Atari fan, you should get it. If you get the Steelbook version, it has that 70's font on the front, which really suits the collection.

I hope this sells enough copies that it will inspire other companies to make a similar product. And I hope Atari decides to make a sequel to this with more games, like Desert Falcon 7800 and the rest of the "2000" series for the Jaguar. Maybe they can even tap into the homebrew community!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mas que una simple colecciรณn de juegos

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Release this Year.
Reviewed in Canada on November 18, 2022
This is hands down EXACTLY what Atari needed to make after all these years for its 50th anniversary. Love letter to the birth of video game culture, it's like journeying into a playable museum. New interviews from Atari staff, tons of flyers and promo art. BIG APPLAUSE to Digital Eclipse for NAILING the controls (that is a major victory I want to highlight, every game is playable). Only nitpick is I ordered the steel book edition, LOVE the gold steel book (stands out proudly amongst my Switch collection), LOVE the poster, but you must be aware that the sleeve that covers the steel book is WAY TOO TIGHT, the sleeve is cracking on the corners it's so tight, most people will want to use that sleeve to keep the beautiful steel book scratch free for as long as they can since this is an AMAZING collection and it really has set a new standard on game compilations and ports. BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO ATARI AND DIGITAL ECLIPSE!!!๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ•น๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

Absolutely love this collection for the games and the priceless information about the history of video games, itโ€™s like you are playing along with a documentary.
Incredible value as many of these games are rare and hard to find, also the reimagined games are top notch and very addictive. I give it 10/10 highly recommended.
