Dinky portable drive for backing up your laptop or adding some extra capacity
Today’s computing world is definitely a mobile one, with a laptop more likely to be the preferred computing device if you need to get work done. While laptops have come along in leaps and bounds in recent years to the point where they should be more than powerful enough for most people’s needs, one area where they still lag behind desktop machines is in storage. Sure, you can configure a laptop with a couple of terabytes of storage when you buy it, and if you’re lucky you might even be able to add an additional drive later in your machine’s life, but that pales in comparison to what you can add to a desktop, especially in terms of capacity.Going on the road with a laptop also makes backing up your data, particularly any jobs you start while you’re on the move, trickier, especially if your work involves photos and videos. Therefore, the chances are you’re going to need an external hard disk or two to either expand the storage capacity your machine has access to or to back up what’s on your laptop when you’re out and about..This 1TB drive from Lexar could be a solution to your problem. Literally fitting within the palm of your hand, measuring in at 60x86mm dimensions, it’s a petite little unit in dark grey plastic with a lighter metal piece on top. Connection is via USB-C port, with USB-A to USB-C and USB-C to USB-C cables included in the box, with USB 3.1 being the supported protocol.Performance is claimed to be up to 550MB/s read and 400MB/s write. Despite trying to copy both a single 29GB file as well as 100 1GB files across from the drive to an m.2 SSD drive in my system, I couldn’t hit that 550MB/s transfer rate. The maximum I saw was about 470MB/s transferring the single large file. The multiple file copy always started out strongly but then faded away to around 100-120MB/s; if I had a lot of data to take off this drive I’d still be off to put the kettle on when the transfer started.Aside from being small the drive is also light. In fact that’s a bit of an issue as it doesn’t feel especially sturdy. While the box claims that the drive resists drops, shock and vibration, I’m not sure I’d want to put the first two of those to the test. Nor does it claim any dust or water resistance, which would be a bit of a mark against it if I were using it for backup duties on the move.Overall this isn’t a bad little device to use around the home to expand your storage options for a laptop but if you wanted something to take on the move I’d probably be tempted to look for something more rugged, even if that probably would mean spending more, just to be sure a moments carelessness didn’t see the drive damaged.

Now Lexar is a well-known brand and the SL200 looks the part as I'd expect. It's well made and nicely finished so it was off to a decent start. The one feature that made the SL200 stand out for me is that this device supports 256-bit AES hardware encryption, and it even comes with a utility on the drive to encrypt the contents and configures access passwords etc.

During testing using well-known free-to-use software, I got 455MB/s reads, and 447MB/s writes on the Default profile. Switching to the Realworld profile, these values dropped to 432MB/s and 426MB/s respectively. Further testing with AS SSD reinforced the idea that read speed is less than quoted but write is generally better than anticipated. Lexar suggests that the interface on the SL200 is built for USB 3.1 Gen 1 so I decided to plug it into a 3.2 Gen 2 port and see if these scores improved.
I assumed they wouldn’t, but the difference in performance was surprising. Performance on both reading and writing improved by between 9 and 25%, with the CrystalDiskMark performance jumping to 568MB/s reads and 522MB/s reads on the Default profile.

Obviously, you can get external SSDs built around NVMe technology that can outperform the Sl200. But, if you don’t have NVMe storage in your system or do, but don’t have a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port, then the SL200 comes into its own and isn’t any slower than any of those drives. And, included in this price you get hardware encryption which is often absent from costlier drives.

In summary, the SL200 1TB offers reasonable performance, sizeable capacity, effective security and is highly portable which does make it very useful for hotdesking and taking my work home with me and vice versa. There are plenty of unbranded designs that are cheaper but these options don’t generally offer encryption so the SL200 is well worth investing in from a security perspective where I find it to be reassuring and I'm more than happy to recommend it if NVMe isn't an option.

Thanks for taking the time to read my review, I hope you found it helpful.

All the best

I’ve been using this drive for about a month, mainly for moving work files from various pcs and bits of kit. I deal with some pretty hefty files of 100-200GB so having a drive that is fast is important. While I’m not sure this is the fastest drive around, it’s plenty quick enough with files moving across in a couple of minutes, and for the price I don’t think you can complain.

Although the case is very lightweight it’s been sturdy enough. It gets thrown about in a bag quite a bit and continues to work just fine. Being solid state and not having any moving parts helps a lot.

The size is also pretty small. Not quite credit card sized, but not far off.

Overall a really solid and, so far, reliable SSD extends, drive.

Used with various Macs. Bought this in 2022. Immediately noticed it was occasionally slow at writing data and would also eject itself during use. Put it aside because of the risks. Tried it again recently and after a little use had the same problems and was prompted to write a review. Avoid if purchasing as a backup device or if intending to use for important files on the go.

Lexar isn't a brand I would typically associate with external SSDs, though I assume most will know them for their SD and Compact Flash cards.

This is a tiny drive, not much larger than a group of regular USB thumb drives sandwiched together. Formatting it on my Mac was no problem and I had it setup for Time Machine in a matter of minutes.

My main grievance however is the performance, which is much slower than I would expect for a drive of this price. It's unlikely I have a defective unit as the rest of the product works fine, but I'm getting speeds that are slower than the mechanical HDD I had previously used. The only compromise here is that Time Machine is a background process, so the speed of the backup isn't critical.

Still, disappointing for what is otherwise a nice little drive.
