This is a great usb stick. Which can be configured to have different partition for public data and private encrypted data. The public data is for use without biometric unlock and private for biometric unlock. The ui for the program to add fingerprints and change settings is straight forward. Unlocks very fast.
I bought the 64GB version. A good value, very solidly-made flash drive which was quick to set up on my desktop PC. The fingerprint reader works consistently well for me and the software, although basic, is easy to use. I also use this drive successfully with my iPad and iPhone (using a USB adapter cable) to access secure files on the move through the built-in Files app. Despite some comments here to the contrary, the thumbprint reader does work normally with my IOS devices. I also have the 32GB version which works well. A great buy for a secure drive.
I had great expectations from this, but a few things made it unusable for me.
Firstly, the fingerprint reader was not completely reliable requiring several attempts on several occasions. If I am entrusting data to it then it has to be perfectly reliable - my phone always recognises my fingerprint first time - this item didn't always do this.
Secondly, setting it up requires access to a PC running Windows. This was not a problem for me but it was an annoyance.
Thirdly, the storage space is divided into two areas. One area is public and not encrypted and the other area is encrypted. This caused me problems as when using it on some non- Windows devices, they more often than not only managed to see the public partition and the encrypted partition could not be seen even after using the fingerprint system. A single encrypted partition would have been better .... and that was what I expected when I bought it.
Not suitable for my purposes - I need total compatibility across all devices with a USB port.
Returned to AMAZON who are always very good about accepting items back.
The flash drive appears as a normal windows folder until you put your access details in either via a password or using the finger print scanner - this reveals a secret folder that only you have access or whoever you want to have access.
The build quality is very nice, feels metal solid not like some flash drives that are made of crap.
Perfect for what I wanted, a place nobody knows that exists. Good security
I got my fingerprint registered on the device and copied over some files I want to secure.
The first time i tried it on a different laptop, Explorer displayed all the files without any security.... I took it back to the desktop where I had registered the fingerprint and no matter how many times I tried, my fingerprint was not accepted by the drive and also displays all the files. I have wiped it and formatted it, but am now out of the return window at Amazon so stuck with it. Talk about a waste of time and money..... To be honest, I am stunned at how stupid it is. Save yourself time and money and find something else.
Set it up with fingerprint. After a while it times out and closes the secure drive, leaving the normal drive open. Pressing the fingertip against it opens up the secure drive again.
It is likely to be necessary to alter the default partitioning to give more secure space. This worked easily for me (on a pc running windows 10).
... which were probably my fault for being impatient and not reading the guide carefully. When you plug it in it appears amongst your devices as "CD drive (?) Lexar". Yes it is pretending to be a CD but it is an unsecured partition of the "Finger Drive". Click on this and you will find the "Finger tool(?) Lexar.exe" which is used to set up an admin password for future configurations and to record your fingerprint. Note that, when recording your fingerprint, you have to press your finger onto the reader briefly but several times when prompted. Actually I found it easier to use my thumb so that I could support the device from behind with my fingers. After this you will find a USB device has been named "secure" which is the secure partition of the drive only accessible via fingerprint. So, after all this you can test it by ejecting and removing the device, plug it in again and then press your finger (or thumb) onto it which causes the name of the device to be "secure". You can then store you secrets on this device. You can use the aforementioned "Finger Tool" to do other stuff like changing the open and secure partitions of the device, adding fingerprints for more people and changing your admin password etc. Note that you only need you finger (or thumb) to access the secure area. The password is only needed for admin tasks. You can download a PDF guide for this from the Lexar web site. Update Jan 2022 - It still works but is it worth the hassle? I've just spent at least 2 minutes with my thumb stuck to this thing (I registered my thumb) moving it around a bit, keeping it still, standing in a bucket of water, whistling, praying and no response was forthcoming. Sometimes it responds almost immediately but most often not. I think the blurb promises a quick response. It should be "a quick response, sometimes". Dropped a star and I'll see how it goes.
Few months later ... It works but only sometimes. Perhaps my thumb is non-standard. Anyway, I will persevere as it's a great idea and much better than remembering yet another password.
Rien a redire j'adore
