I always find it interesting how so many songwriters do not know how to write a memorable 'hook' in songs they are trying to market. Simple tips, using a bass drum to enhance the hook is something I often use and making the drums and bass the engine of your song, after all, if the drums and bass aren't kicking together, then the rest of the song is going to struggle. Backing vocals can also be used to create further hooks. Remember how they worked in the hit song Video Killed the Radio Star for example. When you have finished writing to song, do you have it buzzing around your head days later? If the hook is strong and memorable, then it should do! #JustSayin'

Things I DON'T want to hear you say in bed* with me. *When 'bed' means voiceover recording session' obviously... 😱 '𝗪𝗛𝗜𝗖𝗛 𝗘𝗡𝗗 𝗜𝗦 𝗪𝗛𝗜𝗖𝗛' You know what every great session needs? A clear beginning, middle and end. For a voice actor, that means a script that's been approved in advance so they know exactly what they're dealing with. There's nothing worse than recording becoming an impromptu copywriting session because not everyone read the script in advance. 😱 '𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗚𝗘𝗧 𝗜𝗧 𝗜𝗡 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗠𝗢𝗨𝗧𝗛?' No-one wants to hear me splutter for an hour. Provide pronunciation guides for complicated/unusual words in advance. It means we can focus on the performance rather than spending fifteen minutes on Youtube trying to master 'Floccinaucinihilipilification'. 😱 '𝗜'𝗩𝗘 𝗕𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗚𝗛𝗧 𝗔 𝗙𝗥𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗗' Most voice actors are pretty open minded. For the price of our... session fee, we'll try most things. But please designate ONE person to be the source of all feedback whenever possible.  There's nothing worse than having to navigate contradictory feedback or trying to action ten different people's notes. 😱 '𝗬𝗢𝗨'𝗥𝗘 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬 𝗚𝗢𝗢𝗗 𝗔𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦' Feedback is important in every collaborative activity. Otherwise we don't know what you like. But be mindful of the language that you use. Being told 'that's sh*t' after a take might be getting to the point, but it's not a turn of phrase that's going to get the best out of a performer. 😱 '𝗗𝗢 𝗜𝗧 𝗢𝗡 𝗩𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗢' Be clear about giving a full technical brief to VO talent. If they have to narrate 'to video', then knowing this in advance can be invaluable. There's no point in us marking up a script if we end up not being able to use it in the first place. And in sessions without an audio engineer, knowing in advance whether you'd like playback is especially appreciated so we're not having to scrabble something together mid-session. ==== To sum up, a great voice recording session is a collaboration. If you turn up with no thought of how to get the best out of it, you're only going to be disappointed. This DOESN'T mean planning everything rigidly. We want to provide as much room for play as possible, after all. But being a considerate l̶o̶v̶e̶r̶ director goes a long way. Voiceover artists, producers and creative writers! When receiving a script, as a VoiceOver artist, it's our job to sound as natural, conversational, unaffected and relatable as possible in order to get the message across. Any affectations could hamper the read and lose authenticity. When I receive scripts I will more than likely be asked to read "we will" "they will" "it is" or "I have." Now when we speak , we will naturally contract these to "we'll" "they'll" or "I've." So should we read them as we would speak them? Have they been written in full for a reason? In doing so, are we changing the script and going against what the writers wants? Whenever I hear an advert on the radio or tv and the vo is saying "we will" to my ears, it sounds clunky and I can hear them reading out loud, as opposed to actually BELIEVING what they are saying. It begs the question, why don't we receive scripts that are already contracted, so the writer has a conversational and natural tone in mind? Are they relying on their voiceovers to interpret them as they feel? Context is key here. If it's an E-Learning script, then we may well be expected to read the phrase in full, in order to maintain clarity. Are there any guides on the script in terms of tone and style? Do they require a formal tone and not conversational? If in doubt, we should ask the producer/writer what they want in terms of tone and style and let that influence our choices. Personally, I would always contract, as it's my job to sound as natural and as genuine as I can and it helps massively if the script is written as such. I'm interested to know what other VoiceOver artists do when presented with full phrased like "they will" or "it is." And I'd love to hear from writers and producers for their thoughts.

Occasionally a script comes along that's so good, you just want to let it melt on your tongue... Now don't get me wrong there are some amazing scripts and books I've had the pleasure of delivering. But this one gave me chills while I was reading it. I could feel the character moving through me. This is the feeling we chased as actors and when you get it, you can't help but to chew that scenery. 𝓐𝓷𝓭 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓪𝔀𝓪𝓻𝓭 𝓰𝓸𝓮𝓼 𝓽𝓸..... Nope, not me. Am I an award winner? No. Am I an award nominee? Nope. Have I ever submitted my work for an award. Not that either. So why this post? Because last weekend a big Voiceover industry awards celebration took place in the UK and my feed is filled with celebrations, commiserations and general fabulousness about the ceremony and the conferences leading up to the awards. I haven't ever submitted my work for an award. Mainly due to logistics and where I'd need to be resident to do so, but also 𝓯𝓮𝓪𝓻 𝓸𝓯 𝓻𝓮𝓳𝓮𝓬𝓽𝓲𝓸𝓷 𝓹𝓮𝓻𝓱𝓪𝓹𝓼? Yeah, I guess so. However, while I do believe that certain awards carry value and that being recognised by leading experts in your industry that you're worthy of an award is certainly commendable, an award doesn't: - Make you work more efficiently. - Make your set-up more professional. - Make you offer a "fuss-free" service.   - Make you more reliable, trustworthy and adaptable. - Make you say "okey dokey" during a live directed session which the non-native clients find endearing. - Make you more available. - Make you more skilled, flexible and human. - BRING IN MORE WORK. You still have to go out and actively seek it and work for it. And the list goes on...... I know countless voice artists who are absolutely BRILLIANT at what they do. Who are full-time and who earn a very good living, but who also have never submitted their work for an award. So what can I offer other than an award? How do you direct a notoriously crazy STEVEN SEAGAL who is known for beating up co-stars and directors if he doesn't have his way? You don't. You can't direct these action stars like you would direct a normal actor. In the case of Seagal: ✊ If you try to direct him too hard, he would beat me up or leave the set. 👊 If you let him loose, he'll go so far off script that your film becomes what he likes to talk about that day. For example, a scene about crashing the uprising becomes a scene on how to massage a woman (True story 🤣 I did leave that scene in there because it was so insane and made Steven a better bad guy in the film). So, you have to manipulate him into doing what you want him to do and make him think it was his idea. How? You find the triggers. Seagal has a huge ego. Cater to that, find out what his favorite movies and scenes are, and make him believe he is doing one of those scenes. I don't particularly like to trick my cast, but my job is to make a movie. Using these techniques, I even got Steven to kill his own clone in the film—movie history, you are welcome 😁

When I recorded my Hyrule Temple cover, I made an alternate recording that was lit by the sun instead of my usual LEDs. Here's a short clip where I switch between the takes so you can see how different it looks! Obviously I preferred the LEDs since that's the version I ultimately uploaded, but what do you think of the natural lighting version? #pianocover #lighting #ssbm

"Breaking News Accent" Voice Acting Challenge When asked to deliver a particular accent or character for a script, as much as possible "try" to make it your own and an original rather than do an impression of something (or someone) that is familiar, because when you take that latter route, you lose your original take of the script and focus on how "it should be done". #voiceover #voiceoverartist #voiceactor
