As many of us get excited about the busy festival season, news like this is very sad to witness and should not be taken lightly. Another festival succumbing to the relentless financial pressures that are causing havoc in the events industry should be a stark reminder of how fragile the sector is at present. The ripple effects of soaring operating costs highlight the urgent need for sustainable solutions. AIF CEO John Rostron says in the article, “The speed of festival casualties in 2024 shows no sign of slowing. We are witnessing the steady erosion of one of the UK’s most successful and culturally significant industries not because of a lack of demand from the public but because of unpredictable, unsustainable supply chain costs and market fluctuations. In asking for a temporary reduction in VAT related to ticket sales, we have provided Government with a considered, targeted and sensible solution, which would save this important sector. We need action now.” The loss of festivals extends beyond entertainment. These events generate significant economic activity, supporting local businesses and providing employment opportunities. Their absence means lost revenue, job losses, and diminished community spirit. The reduction of ticket VAT with the suggested 5% initiative may not be a long-term fix but it will help keep festivals afloat! Three Live Event Professionals, Trying to Sort Their Lives Out!!!   One year ago today, there was an initial conversation about starting a podcast - "3 am Doughnuts."   While life, work, and family commitments meant the podcast itself never fully materialised, the process and discussions around it have been nothing short of hysterical and truly bonding.   So, here is a rough overview of what could have been, but never was…. (Yet…)   Season 1: "Rotational Velocity: Salmon and Brie Breakfast Paninis"   The audacious title for the inaugural season of "3 am Doughnuts," a podcast designed to take listeners on an intriguing journey into our personal and professional lives as humans and event professionals. Though we never hit the record button, our vision and planning captured the dynamic spirit of the live events industry, and has provided us with an outlet for life's and works daily challenges.   Our episodes aimed to encapsulate the fast-paced and ever-changing nature of the live events industry, with each episode delving into our unique professional journeys and shared experiences. #SpeakerDiversity As a speaker striving to make a mark in the meetings and events industry, the journey toward securing opportunities remains fraught with challenges. Despite the industry's progress in embracing diversity, the reality is that the same well-known speakers often dominate the stage, leaving little room for emerging voices. Even as we see strides in representing various gender identities, races, ages, and physical abilities, the industry still tends to favor the familiar faces. Last year and again this year, I've experienced firsthand how the most coveted speaking spots are reserved for big names or tied to sponsorships. This practice sidelines many capable speakers who bring fresh perspectives and valuable insights but lack the high-profile recognition or sponsorship backing. At events like PCMA's Convening Leaders, Meeting Professionals International 's WEC, or #cemasummit speaker lineup and panels still lack true diversity with the industry’s entrenched practices continuing to create barriers. The process of achieving true diversity needs more than just good intentions. As Jessie States, CMP, CMM, vice president of the MPI Academy, pointed out, it requires proactive outreach and engagement with diverse communities. Now, that sounds like a great intention that also requires real follow-up. For middle-ground speakers like myself, the challenge is twofold: not only must we compete with industry giants, and also face the systemic issue of limited opportunities. The industry’s heavy reliance on sponsorships for speaker slots further narrows our chances to shine. The path to true diversity on stage is a continuous one, requiring ongoing conversations and relationship-building. It’s essential to recognize that bringing new voices to the forefront enriches content and attracts diverse audiences. To create truly inclusive events, we must ensure that every voice has a chance to be heard, not just the ones with established names or corporate backing. Let's continue pushing for more inclusive practices that provide opportunities for all speakers, regardless of their fame or sponsorship status. Swift returns this Summer Whilst the live event wilderness of 2020 is beginning to feel like quite a long time ago, it has undoubtedly played a pivotal role in the rise and rise of the popularity of corporate hospitality, with 2024 set to be one of the busiest years on record. All those months at home with virtual meetings and home schooling, left all of us missing the visceral, immersive joy of live experiences and since sporting and music events started taking place with live audiences again in 2021, corporate hospitality has grown and grown in popularity as a marketing tool. Companies have realised that the quickest and most effective way to broaden a relationship, to open a door or to say thank you, is to spend quality time with a customer in an environment where the magic and energy of the performance becomes a shared, “forever experience”. With more and more senior executives working from home as well as from the office, having a chat over a glass of wine at lunchtime is not always that simple to arrange, but an invite to a sporting or musical event is likely to guarantee at least 4 hours quality time, for a relatively small investment (in the great scheme of relationship marketing). The 2024 hospitality calendar is absolutely jam packed with blue riband events including The Olympics in Paris, The Euros in Germany, Andy Murray’s last Wimbledon, Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, high quality international cricket, as well as the most exciting finish to a Premier League season for years. Many events are already close to selling out, earlier than ever before.  With general admission tickets also selling out incredibly quickly – Glastonbury sold 200,000 tickets in under an hour – private customers are also looking at corporate hospitality as a way to guarantee their participation in an event, with better located seats and an all-inclusive experience a bonus. Stadiums and arenas offer (close to) restaurant quality food, fewer queues, improved connectivity and a quality experience from the moment you arrive until the end of the day. Live entertainment brings people together and it creates a sense of belonging and an authentic connection. This connectivity is a huge asset when it comes to doing business and is hard to replicate with any other type of marketing event. With tens of thousands of fixtures and gigs taking place across the UK throughout the year, for all tastes and for all possible budgets, it is no surprise that more and more sold out signs are going to be seen as the year progresses. #eventprofs #hospitality #events

Absolutely, the notion of innovation in healthcare is crucial, and Matt Ohrt’s colleague John makes a valid point. Innovation isn't just about having new ideas; it's about having the vision to see beyond the status quo and the determination to lead others towards a better future. It's about challenging norms, even when they seem entrenched, and striving for improvement, even in the face of resistance. Change is inevitable, and those who resist it often find themselves left behind. The current system, where sellers hold all the power, leaves patients with limited choices and often subpar service. But the tide is turning, and the free-market healthcare movement is gaining momentum. By embracing competition and focusing on transparency, affordability, quality, accessibility, and service, the real healthcare heroes - physicians and other care providers - put patients first. It's heartening to see more employers recognizing the importance of supporting practices that prioritize patient care over profits. Indeed, the free-market model holds the promise of a brighter future for healthcare—one where patients are empowered, providers are accountable, and innovation thrives.
