Our 5 biggest struggles as a Glasgow based studio were: 1. Not being a London based studio 2. Limited local opportunities in our niche 3. Small local talent pool (voice actors) 4. Non local prospects wanted to work with a sound design partner on their street So here's what we did: 1. Persevered. And guess what? The world changed. The business landscape shifted. It turns out: 1. Not being a London based studio is now our biggest advantage 2. Now our local industry is growing and we can add tremendous value to it. 3. We cast our projects from all over the UK and beyond. Unbeatable casting service. 4. We only work with clients who focus on the creative and relationships. Not convenience. Happy Monday everyone! Hope you all had a relaxing and restorative weekend. Here's your news round-up to kick off the week. 1. Unfortunately starting with more layoffs, the entire UK-based QA team for Apex Legends was reportedly laid off, with EA shutting the UK branch down unexpectedly. Managers were expecting to see contracts renewed in a few weeks time, and now there's another 40 people scrambling to find work in a crowded market. Hopefully all those impacted can land on their feet soon. https://lnkd.in/g9JvyVTF 2. Rockstar has quietly raised the prices on its GTA+ subscription service, a service that really only applies to you if you're a huge, and I mean HUGE GTA Online person. I'm curious, if you are that person, do you feel the service is worth it? Would you pay more for it than the price hike that's already happened? I suspect Rockstar will raise prices again, this time a little closer to a certain big release. https://lnkd.in/gTSGCXwb 3. The BAFTA's were last week, and you can check out all the winners here. Personally, I'm just ecstatic that Toronto-based dev Visai Games took home the award for Best Debut Game for "Venba," a very well deserved win. https://lnkd.in/g3zFPjTg 4. Lastly, a repost from Friday but just incase you missed it, Prytania Media shutdown another of its studios, closing Possibility Space and laying off the entire staff. This is an interesting one: UK PETITION TO ‘STOP PUBLISHERS KILLING GAMES’ EMERGES For context, in the UK anyone who gets more than 10k signatures on a petition has the right to have it debated by the government. This petition gained 27k signatures very quickly. It didn't get the response they wanted (and got closed early because of the UK's upcoming election). However, it's an interesting one, especially in the detail. Essentially it highlights that when players buy a game the terms state that the game can be cancelled at any time. That applies to both games as a product or service - and there is debate over the definition of those two. And this happens a lot. The petition references Ubisoft's The Crew servers being taken down after 10 years. It's perhaps hard to totally get behind that. But the point is interesting. What the petition actually asks is: "Require publishers to leave video games (and related game assets / features) they have sold to customers in a reasonably working state when support ends, so that no further intervention whatsoever is necessary for the game to function, as a statutory consumer right." https://lnkd.in/ems4fd7z

🚨 Can Nostalgia create a path back to games industry growth? 🚨 💡 ⤵ I went to watch Inside Out 2 with my daughter on Saturday (well worth a watch!) and one of the new emotions was Nostalgia. Whilst only playing a minor role for 13 year old Riley in the film, it is an emotion increasingly being felt by publishers and gamers. Whether it be big scale returns of old PC classics or emulator apps cropping up on mobile, it is clear that many players are looking for a Nostalgia hit! But Why? Well for me retro gaming scratches a number of intrinsic needs; 1. Familiarity - An old pair of slippers, moulded to you, is just more comfortable than a shiny pair of Air 1s. 2. Mastery - No one likes being a noob. If players can skip learning and get straight to the fun, they will. 3. Community - Who doesn't love getting the old gang back together... Reminiscing. Laughing. Smiling. From a publisher perspective it makes a lot of sense too. Large amounts of the initial development costs have been sunk already, you have a clear target audience to go after and you have the opportunity to turn back the clock and learn from last time. Nostalgia doesn't have to stunt innovation. In Old School RuneScape we have worked with our community to create entirely new quests, game modes and map expansions whilst staying true to the retro vibe players are looking for. And there are more games coming.... I saw today a 2005 server save of Habbo Hotel is being dusted off and relaunched tomorrow with a community-led voting approach.... sounds familiar 🤔 Good luck Sulake. Hope the launch goes well. So we have Old School RuneScape and now Old School Habbo... I think one of the things that's so frustrating about Xbox's recent studio closures is that it is stark contrast to the things they *say*. They say they want original, interesting games, but then they shutter Tango. They say they want to take big swings at live service stuff, but then release Redfall in a disastrous state and don't have the bottle to fix it before shuttering the studio. They say they want interesting, original content, but then close studios working on original content to bolster Call of Duty. Xbox needs platform-defining exclusives. But they've also shown they don't have the understanding to ship stuff that can legitimately compete with what Sony's doing with Playstation's first parties. What happened to Starfield? Redfall flopped. Halo Infinite's SP "infiniteness" faceplanted. Halo Infinite's multiplayer took years to sort out a fatally awful progression system, and it still mostly sucks, but who cares because no one's playing it. Forza Motorsport bombed. Where is Gears? Where is the next thing from id? From MachineGames? When it's one studio flailing around, maybe it's the studio. When it's ***everything*** under the Xbox Game Studios banner, it's a different situation entirely. What the hell are they doing over there? But the point is, when you see closures of studios when the platform is totally failing to deliver anything of meaningful, differentiating value to players... it's time to call it. Phil Spencer's driven the Xbox into irrelevance. How you could spend hundreds of millions of dollars to achieve *so little* is genuinely shocking to me.

Truly awful news this evening about Perfect World Co., Ltd. having laid off as much as 1,000 employees in China, according to multiple reports. The company is said to have laid off hundreds of staff (some reports say a thousand) across its R&D departments, with its games operations mostly impacted. One report noted that job losses impacted staff in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and other cities. So many people are struggling, with the current round of #videogames industry layoffs. Many of us in this industry are seriously stressed in these difficult times. The latest Consumer Market Valuation Report published by Ukie was published a few days ago, and I only just managed to go through it. The report shows that 📈 The UK games market was worth £7.8 billion in 2023, a 4.4% increase compared to 2022's revised total of £7.5 billion 📈 Software sales were up 4.1% year-on-year, while hardware also grew 2.1% compared to 2022 However: 📈 Consoles led growth for hardware with a 12% increase 📉 PC showed an 11% decrease 📈 VR hardware sales also increased by 11% to £194 million 💴 Revenue from the “Broader Game Culture Sector”, a new vertical the UKIE created to encompass revenue from TV, film, soundtracks, books, and merchandise reached £418 million Source: https://lnkd.in/ggxPsdpe

The Sumo Group closures really have broken me a bit, and I need to rant about the state of things. I'm sorry if it seems I'm glossing over all the closures before this one, but so many ex-students went there, so many ex-colleagues passed through there, and so my timeline is just filled with people looking for work. We keep talking and talking about the economic factors involved, Brexit and Covid and this and that ... the thing I can't stop thinking of is that in my life I've watched the world slowly pitch into a place of despondent capitalism. Art has become more about making stars and fame than helping people escape and reflect. A drive for "truth" and objectivity has resulted, paradoxically, in people putting more stock in spreadsheets and numbers than people. I can't help but feel that if you're bleating about finance and trade deals and business decisions, you're ignoring the fact that general support for artistic and creative endeavours has declined sharply and is still declining, even in the so-called "art world". Games are ultimately always going to be the first to fall in a culture war against creativity, because games are ultimately and profoundly pointless things. That's the whole majesty of the medium: they make us feel profound feelings, they help us explore our existence by being separate from reality, but to do so they MUST bring us nothing tangible in return. The truth is that our industry will probably bounce back to some degree, but it's not any financial structures or cost systems that will save game development as a medium and an art form - it's a cultural shift to recognise the importance of expressive and explorative subjective art in the world today, and the need to support creative endeavours without the pressure of financial recompense.

Creating games is very difficult. And building games is challenging. The process of build requires to compile the code and all the data required in the game in a specific sequence involving many dependencies. As such monitoring the outcome is essential, but not sufficent. What if we were able to predict the outcome of a build ? What if we were able to decrease the required computing resources while increasing our iteration capability ? #Ubisoft #Ubisoftlaforge #innovation

How we helped Hexworks earn serious fan praise for Lords of the Fallen's voice acting. ... and saved them 100's of hours of internal time and resources. In 2014 the original LOTF game was released. - 8/10 for story - 2/10 for voice acting Based in Spain, Hexworks knew it would be hard to cast and produce the English VO by themselves... - Lack of in house resources - Already super busy - no time to take on the casting and VO production - Didn't have the contacts, connections or experience to voice produce in English They reached out to us when one of their team members recommended us from a previous project. - We provided a small, dedicated VO team. Everybody was contactable. Fast - We provided 'multi-location' casting. Working with actors across the globe - Cast a variety of diverse, authentic and interesting talent - We handled all project management - Client focused on their most important work / tasks Hexworks got instant access to our Producer, Editor & Casting / Voice Director. Nice & easy. The result was an outstanding cast assembled from all over the world. Each actor bringing their own unique story, background and lived experience to their role. This is where the magic happens. And the fans loved it. The voice performances received glowing reviews on forums. All because Hexworks decided to: - Go where the talent is and not just base casting in one studio / city - Work with a smaller, story driven partner whose owners are hands on each project "Yeah but not all game devs want to record remote sessions". But remote doesn't = home studio. When we prioritise incredible casting in multi locations. We... - Record in our own studios. - Record with our in market partner studios / facilities. - If home studio is only option and approved.
