  • Millions of children around the world are denied sporting opportunities due to poverty, conflict, gender or disability. As the #ParisOlympics start, olympians and children are calling for better access to sport.🏀⚽   Inés Melchor from Peru, a long-distance runner who participated in the Athens 2004, London 2012 and 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, said:   "Sport combats stress and sets them on a good path for a healthy life. We need to value children's participation in sport and provide them with opportunities and encouragement to take part." Sport isn't only vital for children’s development, it's their right.❤️ Here from children around the world talk about their favourite sports and why they love playing them⬇

  • Child migrant arrivals into Europe via #Greece have quadrupled this year⚠️ Children are facing dire conditions that demand urgent attention, and the new #EUPact could make a bad situation even worse for them. Every child deserves safety and dignity upon arrival. Yet, these #children aren't being treated as children. It's imperative that Greek authorities and the EU step up to provide robust guardianship, essential proper protection systems, and improved living standards. #migration

More than 650 children from the West Bank and an unknown number of children from #Gaza have been detained since October by Israeli authorities⚠ Palestinian children in Israeli-run prisons are facing increasing starvation, abuse, including sexual violence, and infectious diseases, with conditions majorly deteriorating since the war started last October. Torture, cruel or inhuman treatment of children is strictly prohibited under international law. We’ve been working alongside our partner on the ground and speaking to hundreds of former child detainees, and we have never seen such devastation and hopelessness. The children we spoke to have endured horrors an adult should never witness, let alone a child. On Friday 19 July, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) delivered an Advisory Opinion declaring the State of Israel’s continued presence in the occupied Palestinian territory unlawful, directly challenging the legal status of Israeli policies and practices related to military detention. The ICJ's conclusion reinforces the need to immediately end the arbitrary detention and ill-treatment of Palestinian children, a decades-long child protection catastrophe. For too long, the Israeli occupation has severely impacted the lives of Palestinian children. Click here to read former child detainee's testimonies ➡ https://lnkd.in/eEpPPcJF

  • "In future, I want to be a doctor. Our village is very big, and there is no good doctor here. Community members travel to the center, which is three hours away by car for treatment. I want to treat them by being a good doctor" - Jawid*, 11 Jawid* and his friends live in a community in northern #Afghanistan and attend one of our Sponsorship programme target schools. The Sponsorship programme works with children, families, community members, stakeholders, and partners to make sure the school environment is safe and inclusive for all children. We have also built new classrooms, latrines, solar wells, and boundary walls, and trained the school teachers on Child Safeguarding, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support. Jawid* and his friends love to come to school, play together, hike, discover new places in their village, and read books 💫 See the world through Jawid’s* eyes as he uses a polaroid camera to capture his favourite moments and adventures 📸 #education

Child marriage continues to rob girls of their lives and freedom globally. In Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, it remains a deeply entrenched issue, with far-reaching implications for the health, education, and well-being of young girls: ⚠They are far less likely to stay in school, with lifelong economic impacts ⚠They are often isolated and more easily exposed to physical and sexual violence ⚠They are also at greater risk of experiencing sexual transmitted infections ⚠They are obliged to go into recurrent marriages due to lack of income alternatives and pressure at home. In collaboration with the government of Mozambique, child parliamentarians, and locally-based civil society organisations – Fundação Wiwanana, Promura, and Associação Juntos em Acção (AJA) we conducted a gender and power analysis in Cabo Delgado with the aim of understanding the root causes behind the high levels of child marriage. This report therefore provides detailed insights into the causes and impacts of child marriage in conflict affected populations, and aims to inform and drive effective design and implementation of key actions to address the issue. Now is the time to act to protect the futures of the young girls and adolescents in Cabo Delgado. We call on the government and all partners to work with us to end #childmarriage once and for all. Around 50,000 babies have been born in #Gaza in 9 months of war⚠️ Women are facing significant challenges throughout their pregnancies, including a lack of food and clean water, frequent displacement, the traumatic loss of loved ones, and the fear of injury or death. They are also giving birth in traumatic, unhygienic and undignified conditions without access to basic services. It’s an immeasurable political failure that the war has gone on for 9 months - the same time it has taken for a mother to survive a full-term pregnancy💔 Save the Children is currently running a maternity unit in the Gaza Strip, which was set up with the Emergency Health Unit to help women deliver their babies safely. But it is not enough. We call for an immediate and definitive ceasefire as it's the only way to save lives in Gaza and end the relentless, serious violations of children’s rights. More information on the situation in Gaza for pregnant/new mothers👉 https://bit.ly/4cucwB2
