Ukraine Update: Key Macro-Level Developments Peace Efforts: President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has proposed to invite Russia to a peace summit in November. While a breakthrough is unlikely, this move is likely driven by careful political considerations, including being able to tell other countries that Ukraine had tried to initiate peace talks – particularly to countries such as China. US Election: With Joe Biden out of the election and Donald Trump’s pick for vice president opposed to Ukraine aid, Zelenskiy has chosen to stay neutral on the race. Ukraine wants to maintain US support but will remain pragmatic in its diplomatic relations. Economic Resilience: Ukraine has agreed to restructure over USD 20bn in debt, averting a default and saving billions. The deal is an important part of efforts to raise private capital and keep the economy afloat amid the war. Over a week since the French elections and no sight of a new government - an immediate result of the more fragmented political environment in France. We're likely to see more impacts over the year ahead, if not beyond, with significant consequences for the legislative process. For one thing, the passage of the 2025 budget is going to be challenging. Any remotely controversial legislative projects are also likely to get held up in lengthy consensus-building - France's political environment could end up looking more like Germany's. It's not all doom and gloom though - we're working with a lot of businesses interested in investing in France's vibrant economy - and there are a lot of exciting things happen in the business world here. Over the coming weeks, we'll be keeping an eye out for who the next prime minister could be. Yesterday's victory for the centrist, Macron-aligned candidate for president of the lower house gives an indication of the possible direction of travel. #France #Franceelections
