🌍 Climate Myth Busting Session from ClientEarth: Key Takeaways and Insights 🌍 We had the pleasure of attending the "Climate Myth Busting" talk yesterday, chaired by Emiliya Mychasuk, Climate Editor at the Financial Times. The discussion was enlightening, covering the critical topic of "information integrity" in the age of abundant information. Speakers: Maria-Krystyna Duval, Chief Programmes and Impact Officer, ClientEarth Michael Onyango, Alliance for Science Ana Romero Vicente, Researcher at EU DisinfoLab Nick Oldridge, Co-founder, Climate Science Breakthrough Dr. Sheila Ochugboju., Exec Director, Alliance for Science Here are some key takeaways: CO2 and Emissions: CO2 makes up only 0.04% of the atmosphere, with humans contributing 4% of this. This seemingly small number has a significant impact, highlighting the urgent need for action. China's Role: The "but China" argument often surfaces in climate discussions. While China is the current biggest polluter, historically, industrialized nations like the UK have contributed significantly. China is also leading in green energy initiatives, generating four times more green energy and storage than the G7 combined. They have 2 million more EVs than any other country and have built the largest solar farm the size of NYC. Electric Vehicles (EVs): The overall lifecycle emissions of EVs are lower than those of fossil fuel-powered cars, making them a crucial part of the solution. Farming and Diet: Land use for meat and dairy production is predominantly in the global south to feed the global north, with beef and lamb being the highest emitters. Interestingly, 88% of farmland is used for animal agriculture, yet it only provides 17% of our protein and 18% of our calories. Transitioning to a more plant-based diet doesn't mean going 100% vegan or vegetarian but finding balance and making informed choices. "How Bad Are Bananas?" is a recommended read on this topic. Fossil Fuels: No one is advocating for the immediate shutdown of fossil fuels, but we don't need new oil and gas licenses. The transition to renewables is necessary and will involve job losses but also create sustainable careers. A decarbonized society could save $12 trillion in health resources. While mining is needed for green infrastructure, it is less damaging compared to the continued use of fossil fuels. In summary, the session highlighted that while the transition to a greener future is challenging, it is essential.
