If you order the physical copy, you get forced into registering the game with Bethesda.net, Bethesda's cheap knock of steam. Not a cool move. Do yourself a favor and just order it on steam, actually do yourself a favor and just stay clear of the game all together.
After returning this and buying it on steam, I was sorely disappointed with this title.
When you die, you get forced back to before the last boss you defeated. I would expected better of this from an NES title, let alone a modern FPS released by a AAA publisher. Check points have been around since before half-life, learn to use them, and use them often.
As with previous games in the rebooted franchise, there is no manual save option. However, unlike previous entries in the rebooted franchise, there are just about no auto save points. You die on the boss, go back to the beginning of the level. If I was running Bethesda or Machine Games, I would fire everyone who knew about this and thought it was ok to release a game with just about no check points.
The life system would have been an extremely cool feature to offset the terrible use, or lack of use, of checkpoints. Except that when you come back, you come back in the middle of what ever killed you with nearly no health and no armor. This leads to frequently dieing as soon you come back up. All it really does is draw out the process of wiping. The game would actually been better without the life system. The 80s called, they want their game play mechanics back.
Enemies will literally re-spawn right on top of you, even the super soldiers. Not only does this break any sort of continuity, or lack thereof, it also serves as a wtf moment when a super soldier spawns on top of you while you are in the middle of reloading.
Why am I constantly getting video card is out of memory error messages, when the game is running smoothly? What is up with the insanely long load times? Why does the game keep playing when I go into the options menu to adjust the settings, the game should pause when you are in the settings menu. In fact, why is there a complete lack of a pause feature at all. What if I get an important phone call while playing the game.
Like New Order and New Colossus, this games continues the trend of including a maze like base that your supposed to chill out in between levels. I thought this "feature" was terrible in those games, and it is even worse in this one. Recent news seems to indicate that Bethesda is going to include this feature in Doom Eternal, which will be really sad, since part of what made Doom (2016) so fun, was the nearly uninterrupted action.
Why is there a world of warcraft style questing system, complete with quest givers with exclamation points on the minimap? This is a FPS, no an MMORPG, and it breaks up the flow of the action in a bad way.
Finally, and most importantly, where is Billy Blazkowicz? Who gets rid of the main protagonist in a FPS? I have nothing against having strong female characters in a computer game, but seriously who removes the main protagonist from a computer game franchise? This isn't showing how woke you are, it is showing how little respect Bethesda has for the franchise, and that same disrespect for the franchise is what led to an absolutely terrible game. Also the girls are soooooo annoying, especially the cuts scenes of them dancing in the elevators.
Being able to pick and choose missions is nice. Upgrades are cool. Stealth killing is fun but at first only lasts like 10 seconds per charge. Until get to higher levels.. meanwhile your sister is stealth as long as she wants. Not fair. Only played for like 2 hours so far but definitely worth the 24 bucks i spent as a preorder back in November.
Got a write error on startup. Deleteing the vulkan files from your system32 directory will fix that. Didnt crash once for me on my i73700
The gameplay is also not Wolfenstein. Enemies have health bars, you can get into situations where there is no ammo on the map or enemies that are too high level...why is this like an rpg?
You can tell most if not all the maps were designed by Arkhane studios because they look and feel like test maps for dishonored 2 and they are great... except they don't belong in this game.
They make you grind like a looter shooter without the loot and the primary goal of that is to annoy you to the point of spending real money on new (ugly) outfits that you never actually see because it's a first person shooter.
Bethesda has walked right off a cliff lately. This is what? Their 6th release in a row that's subpar but out of all of them this is by far the worst.
The one good thing is the PC version runs amazing thanks to idtech. 4k max settings above 60fps is no issue with a decent GPU, it's just a shame they don't support HDR.
You are better off skipping this one or waiting until it's like $15. Even if you're a die hard fan of the series it's just not worth it. I got my copy for free with a GPU purchase and I had a pre-order but I'm so happy I didn't have to pay for it.
This review applies to the console versions as well. The only difference is visuals and load times.
I am okay with digital downloads, but don't offer a physical edition as an option and lie; that's false advertising.
Move along and spend your money and time elsewhere.
