There is 1 problem with the device (atleast in my system). There is a lot of choppiness and stuttering while gameplay capture. At first I thought it might be because of bitrate in Obs Studio or my internet upload speed is less. After fixing those, these problems didn’t go away. So, I thought why not try a last thing, that is get a usb-c to usb-c cable and not use the usb-c to usb-3.0 cable that comes with the box. And those choppiness and stuttering all went away. I understand why it includes the usb-c to usb-3.0 cable, but it will better if they include an usb-c to usb-c connector and let the customer buy the usb-c to 3.0 if their device doesn’t support usb-c.
1st off there is no support phone number so all correspondence has to be done by email. That wouldn’t be terrible if they responded in a timely manner but they don’t. On average it took the days to respond.
2nd after I explained that all I did was download and install their own firmware and it bricked the card they told me it was a “known issue”. What kind of company release software they know will kill their own card, and not inform their customers or try to fix the software?
3rd after a lot of back in forth that took weeks they sent me a defective refurbished replacement. That’s right they sent a replacement card that was both refurbished, and defective. It then took weeks of back and forth just to get them to finally replace that card with a new in box card, which they should have done in the 1st place.
4th the Elgato card is not plug and play and takes a ton of configuration just to get the colors right. The Elgato card has its own proprietary software it wants you to use and makes using the card with any other software a pain even though it claims to work with OBS and OBS streamlabs. The big issue is that colors are washed out and has a gray haze if you try to use anything but their proprietary software which is a huge resource hog. Elgato support acts like they have never heard about this problem, but a simple google search for “Elgato colors grayed out in OBS streamlabs” or “ Elgato colors are dim in OBS” shows that there are alot of people who are having this issue. I find it hard to believe that Elgato isn’t aware of this problem. I do find it easy to believe that they just don’t care giving my experience with their support. In fact this is why I believe there is no way to call or chat with support. The harder they make it to contact them, means the less complaints they have to hear.
All in all I am very disappointed in this card and will be switching back to the razer ripsaw. 3 years of flawless plug and play dependability from a $200 razer ripsaw vs the $400 Elgatos 1 month and then 3 months dealing with their terrible customer support just to get them to replace the card their own software killed.
Don’t make my mistake and don’t believe the hype.
I’ve also recorded a few videos without PC and went onto Premiere Pro and the quality and playback are absolutely crisp. It captures everything perfectly and it’s no struggle setting up. I would highly recommend this to anyone if you really want to take your game recording up a notch, as it really does the best job!
* Device's clock gets reset easily. As a result, the timestamps in the saved files' names are useless and make organizing files saved to my NAS a hassle.
* Lack of HDR tone mapping is annoying, particularly since I haven't figured out an HDR workflow yet without buying all new editing software and I want to play games with HDR enabled.
* The most problematic issue though is standby mode which the device automatically enters when not being used. To exit standby mode you have to physically press the capacitive button on the device. This could be an issue if you've got a cat in your lap or are otherwise not able to cross the room to your entertainment center. Even worse is that (at least with XBOX) the console will refuse to start a remote play session if it can't detect an hdmi display is connected. You could literally be on the other side of the state at the time you want to play now that such remote features exist. To work around this, I keep an hdmi coupler nearby to directly connect my TV and Xbox when I am not recording. It would be a much better experience if standby mode ended automatically when I began using my console or if I could disable the use of standby mode entirely via the config file.

I gave it a 4 star for Easy to use because you might need to set the compression format to a different one if the video editing software that you use doesn't support the newer ones.

PRO
- qualità pazzesca 1080p e 4k HDR
- versatilità
- encoding hardware integrato
- pc non necessario
CONTRO
- non proprio economica
- non supporta il 1440p
- nessun passthrough alto frame rate
NB. Su pc usare solo ed esclusivamente schede video NVIDIA!
