Before you ask about OpenMW
It's not compatible with the mods we'll be using, and this is really for people who bought the Steam version. See: https://openmw.org/en/ if you want a different type of headache

"Mods that require Morrowind Script Extender (MWSE), Morrowind Graphics Extender (MGE), Morrowind Code Patch (MCP), or similar game engine mods are not compatible because they modify the original Morrowind.exe engine, which OpenMW replaces."

See my OpenMW video Guide if you want to use it: https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ
What can I do With This Guide?
You can get Morrowind to render distant locations and run in 1080p and Upward, as well as adding mod support.

If this doesn't work for you, you probably did something wrong.

I am not liable if you fry your PC or ♥♥♥♥ up your Morrowind install.
Turn Off The Steam Overlay
This should be simple enough that even people who paid for Skyrim can do it. Right click Morrowind in your Steam Library and in the menu that appears click properties, this will open a tab, and on the first page (which should be "General") Uncheck "Use Steam Overlay while in game".

"But why am I doing this?" you may ask? Well you snivelling little cretin, Morrowind and most other games Bethesda has made and will unfortunately continue to make don't play nice with the Steam Overlay for some people. Generally it contributes to instability and is frankly not that useful considering most of you have phones or a second screen.
Modding Time
Now if you were somehow competent enough to do that, you're well on your way to getting this game going. Now first your gonna need to download and install MGE EX, basically it just makes the game run better and look a lot better. Now the install for it can be hard (mainly because the readme is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥) but just drop it into your Morrowind directory.

MGE EX: https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/41102

"But how do you get to the directory?" Well just like the last step, open the properties window and and this time look for local files, it'll look something like this:

Click "Browse Local Files" and keep this window open, just for the sake of not having to repeat this.

It'll tell you in the readme to install DirectX 9, you don't have to do this as DirectX 10-11 etc. is already on your machine. Just extract the whole folder to the Morrowind folder. Not any folders you see in the tab you just opened, don't drag ♥♥♥♥ into those then come crying to me that it doesn't work. Just to the Morrowind folder you opened with Steam and I told you to keep open.

From there just run the installer, it does most of the work for you, and has instructions in the program itself that if you take the time to actually read and not just give up and pester me or the mod author, will help you quite a bit.

And just crank all that stuff up as high as possible because it's Morrowind, like if your device can't handle max settings, I'd really consider upgrading whatever toaster you're playing on.

"It says my computer doesn't support [setting here]" Yeah just live with it. It's not so bad.

Now why I said to do this first is because MGE EX comes with Morrowind Script Extender, that I have no idea how to get otherwise, but is needed for any sort of mods to work, and yeah a byproduct of making the game pretty and stable is mod support.

Now like always we're gonna fix Bethesda's game for them with the Morrowind Code Patch

MCP: https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/19510

Like last time, extract the file to your Morrowind folder and run the application. This time it's Morrowind Code Patch.

Now I know a lot of the stuff you can check and uncheck is confusing but if you JUST READ THE DESCRIPTION OF WHAT EVERY THING YOU CAN CHECK DOES you can pick and choose what you want fixed or changed to suit you.

I really recommend the sound fix. Trust me if you've got tinnitus you'll thank me.

And you're ready to go!
Now what?
Well now you can go play Morrowind. This should just work, and you don't need to do anything else. I am entirely unresponsible for you and anything that happens to your PC/Morrowind install after this. Like I said, if you mess up it's YOUR FAULT.

good guide, but I prefer the morrowind code patch so it can run off of the game's orignal engine.
