Can I build university campus out of the town?
Will students go there via metro? Do I have to build there also shops?

There are two types of students – those who are under 21 (children), and those who live in student dormitories. For the first type, they just need to go to the university building, so you can just build it somewhere and provide transport. The second type need access to shops and so on from their dormitories, so building those far away can be an issue.

Well, then how about building a metro station in their reach, shouldnt that let them to drive to shops in the city?

Yes, but using public transit for access to basic services can have issues, especially if the destination is busy or people at the point of departure are looking for a service (e.g. church) that cannot be fulfilled at any reachable destination.

Also, you need to staff the university and probably bring in off-campus students to your out-of-town campus, so if you're not going to build a small town with local services at the campus you'd more than likely already be running at least one public transit service that can bring people from campus to shopping and recreational facilities. As such, a dedicated metro line just to give adult students living on campus access to shopping and recreational facilities is likely unnecessary.

IF you deside to build publc transport example from your appartment buildings to a university somewhere further away.. Then i highly recommend that you dedicate example the bus station so that only passengers and students can use it, and then build another station nearby only for workers. The issue is that stations pretty fast can be overfilled with students and passengers so people are unable to go to work.
And if you mix passengers to use a single bus station the maybe consider dedicated bus routes.. example one for workers only, and another for students and passengers so you are sure people can go to work and keep the city running.

It dosent matter as much with the metro since it have a much higher capacity but just saying if you have busses that can carry example 50 people and there are 150 people waiting all the time then that will be an issue

its a good idea to build the most important things within walking range such as supermarket and kindergarden and then people can take the bus to things further away such as sport, culture
