So... I have good news! That is exactly how the game will work at launch! :)
You get a new tool that places a habitat marker, and the current overlay gets simplified a bit into... an overlay! In addition to making it easier, the habitat marker actually enforces the area in case you absolutely want your capybara in a particular spot.
The demo will be updated with this stuff at launch (less than 3 weeks), too!
NOTE: Demo saves from the current version will not be compatible.
