Mike Gundy addresses Ollie Gordon DUI arrest: 'I've probably done that a thousand times'

Editor's note: This story has been updated to include Mike Gundy's response clarifying his original comments.

Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy opted to bring running back Ollie Gordon to Big 12 Media Days on Tuesday to hold him accountable for his recent DUI arrest.

While Gordon was faced with questions in Las Vegas regarding the arrest, Gundy said at media days that the Big 12's reigning Offensive Player of the Year wouldn't miss any game time, even after he was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence on the morning of June 30.

When Gundy was later asked about his decision not to suspend his star running back, he commented on his reasoning not only to not suspend him, but also to bring him to Big 12 Media Days.

"So I looked it up on my phone, what would be the legal limit? Like, in Oklahoma, it's .08. And Ollie was 0.1. So I looked it up. And it was, based on body weight — not to get into the legal side of it, but I thought, really, two or three beers, or four," Gundy told the ESPNU broadcast team. "I'm not justifying what Ollie did, I'm telling you what decision I made. Well I thought, 'I've probably did that 1,000 times in my life.' Which is fine. I got lucky, people get lucky.

"Ollie made a decision that he wished he could have done better. But when I talked to Ollie, I told him, 'You're lucky you got out light.' ... Nobody got hurt. We see people doing this and losing their lives across the country, not just football players but everybody. So [he] got out lucky."

The Athletic's Stewart Mandel later asked Gundy to clarify his statements, with the Oklahoma State coach saying he was referring to the times he made "bad decisions," not specifically drunk driving.

Gundy sent out a tweet on his personal X account (formerly Twitter) to clarify his comments. "My intended point today at Big 12 media days was that we are all guilty of making bad decisions. It was not a reference to something specific."

Mike Gundy explains why Ollie Gordon won't be suspended

Oklahoma State opens the season with South Dakota State on Aug. 31 and hosts Arkansas the following weekend. With Texas and Oklahoma moving to the SEC, the Cowboys open the season as Big 12 favorites, returning 20 starters, including Gordon.

"He's going to play," Gundy said Tuesday in Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. "I'm going to do what we think is best for Oklahoma State football. And I think it's best for Ollie to play. If there's any punishment, it's making him carry the ball 50 times in the first game."

While Gundy said he told Gordon that he would have to answer for his decision, he also said he would have to answer for Gordon. But he said that after the media days, he is moving on from talking about the matter.

"I'm going to tell them, at 4 o'clock, this is over for me," Gundy said. "We've talked about all of this. People have asked if he's playing in the first game, and yeah, he's going to play in the first game because that's what he does. ... Is suspending him for one game really going to matter? I don't think so. Suspending him for six games, maybe that's the way to go. But then that's not fair for our team and I have to take them into consideration."

Gundy said his talks with Gordon, along with facing the music at media days should help his back learn his lesson.
