As the nation faces power outages and growing demand, Aboitiz Renewables, Inc. (ARI), AboitizPower's renewable energy arm, is helping address the need for sustainable power solutions. With the addition of the new 159 megawatt peak (MWp) Laoag Solar Power Plant in Aguilar, Pangasinan, and the existing 94 MWp Cayanga-Bugallon Solar Power Plant, the grid now benefits from over 200 MW of capacity. ARI not only aims to contribute to AboitizPower's goal of 3,700 MW of additional renewable energy by 2030 but also innovates by situating solar power plants on non-arable soil to avoid impacting the agricultural industry. As the Philippines grows its renewable energy capacity, the rapid expansion of solar power raises concerns about its impact on food security. Solar panels, while providing clean energy, often require large land areas, displacing agricultural activities and potentially affecting livelihoods and food production. In response, Aboitiz Renewables, Inc. has developed innovative solutions with its 159-megawatt peak (MWp) Laoag and 94 MWp Cayanga-Bugallon solar power plants in Pangasinan. Built on sloping, non-arable grounds, these facilities provide about 200 MW, enhancing supply during grid alerts. Other innovative strategies, such as growing crops beneath or beside solar panels, installing solar panels on bodies of water, and repurposing non-agricultural land, are also being considered to minimize the displacement of agricultural activities. At the Asia Clean Energy Forum 2024, AboitizPower Chief Corporate Services Officer Carlos Aboitiz called for a more realistic conversation about shifting to renewable energy (RE) sources. He emphasized that reliance on the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) for assessing RE overlooks the costs of maintaining a reliable grid. Carlos pointed out that while renewables should be part of the energy mix, these sources cannot be the sole solution due to the intermittencies and additional system costs associated with energy storage. He stressed the need for other generation technologies to secure a stable power supply amidst the rising energy demand in the Philippines. Energy security hinges on a reliable electricity supply. As we transition to cleaner generation sources, a balanced mix is critical, as renewable energy sources like solar and wind can be intermittent, depending on weather conditions and time of day. This ensures a smooth shift and enhances energy security. By diversifying our energy portfolio, we lessen vulnerabilities inherent to individual generation methods and mitigate disruption risks. Complementing solar and wind power with flexible and lower-carbon options like liquefied natural gas helps manage the intermittent nature of these renewable sources. Through its balanced energy mix, AboitizPower strives to help ensure the country's energy security. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dXGie7wS #TransformingEnergyforABetterWorld #AboitizPower
