About us

At Genesis, we’re working to put power in the hands of our customers. Whether it’s electricity, solar or gas we’ll find the energy solution that’s best for you and the life you lead. Our energy management options are affordable, simple to use and put you in control of your home or business’s energy use. We own and operate 1,890MW of electricity generation including a high efficiency 400MW combined cycle gas cycle turbine, hydro stations at Tongariro, Tekapo and Lake Waikaremoana, thermal generation at Huntly and the Hau Nui Wind Farm in the Wairarapa. We also have a 46 per cent equity interest in the Kupe oil and gas fields located in Taranaki. Genesis holds flexible supply contracts for 100 per cent of Kupe’s gas. We see real opportunities to help more Kiwi homes enjoy bottled gas and our guaranteed supply and LPG Retail Distribution business mean we’re set to grow our share of the LPG market. People working for us care about giving customers the best possible energy experience. That means we need people who are up for challenging the status quo and understand how technology can shape better customer experiences. If you want to help reimagine energy for New Zealanders, you’re going to like being on our team.

We’re over halfway through the year and have a lot to celebrate so far 🎉 Here are a few highlights… - Together with our joint venture partner, Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV), we officially began construction of our 63 MW solar farm at Lauriston. - We announced a 10-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) partnership with Spark New Zealand to support the development of new renewable energy capacity in Aotearoa. - We helped raise over $15,000 for community groups that help create warm, healthy homes for Kiwi families in need through our partnerships with Wellington’s Sustainability Trust, Christchurch’s Community Energy Action Charitable Trust, and Habitat for Humanity Northern Region. - We celebrated 10 years of being listed on the stock exchange. - Our team helped plant almost 2,000 native trees to help restore the former wetland located near Huntly Power Station. - Finally, there's a lot to wrap up for Power Shout. 300,000 free hours were gifted to Kiwis who need a helping hand during the colder months through our Power Shout gifting programme. 27,552 trees were planted from 178,552 bookings made during a time slot that had a green Power Shout icon through Trees That Count, and our team was awarded Best Overall Loyalty Program in the Telco, Utilities, Energy, and Service Station category at the Asia Pacific Loyalty Awards. We’re looking forward to seeing what the next half of 2024 brings.

For Volunteer Week, we encouraged our people to share with us the ways that they chose to use their annual Volunteer Leave 🧡 Here are a few highlights: - Mitesh Bhatt, Automation Engineer, took part in Canine Volunteering training at the SPCA which involves cleaning dog pens, washing their toys, taking them for walks, and making sure they get the best nourishment. - Diego Andres, Wholesale Markets Analytics Chapter Lead, volunteered with #AdaptMTB who organise opportunities for people with disabilities to give mountain biking a go. - Wayne Crean, Spot Trading Manager, volunteered at the Annual Adaptive Snow Sports Festival, helping to organise and run the festival as Chair of the national committee with Snow Sports NZ. The festival helps people with disabilities get on the snow – from first-timers to Paralympic Games medal-winners. - Jenna S., Service Desk Lead, organised a volunteer day at Hamilton Zoo for some of the IT Operations Team, which included digging holes and planting 500 trees. - Our Brand and Marketing team volunteered at Habitat for Humanity Northern Region – one of Genesis’ community partners who we are supporting through our Wamer Homes campaign. The team got stuck in making door snakes to keep draughts at bay, and putting together winter warmer packs which will be donated to low-income families in need. - Stewart McNair, LPG Operations Team Leader, supported his daughter's school with transport and parent supervision for their cycle trail trip through central Otago. - Francis Rolan Rama, Industrial Chemist, spent the day collecting rubbish together with their family. We’re proud of our people who volunteer their time, skills and energy to give back to their communities. It was wonderful to see how many members of our team took this opportunity to make a difference - whether that be by donating plasma, selling daffodils or planting trees.

For National Volunteer Week, our people rolled up their sleeves to plant almost 2,000 native trees to help restore the former wetland located near Huntly Power Station 🌳 The project has been in full swing since January, with the area being fenced off and weed management being done to prepare the land for planting. Restoring the 4.5ha site will help filter water flowing into the Waahi Stream, which flows into the Waikato, provide better holding and drainage of water during times of flooding and support biodiversity in the area. 📸 Our hardworking volunteers, alongside Waikato Rivercare and POU Ltd making the most of the blue skies.

Thanks to hundreds of generous Kiwis, we’ve helped raise over $15,000 so far for community groups that help create warm, healthy homes for Kiwi families in need 🧡🏡 Did you know just $54 could transform a child’s bedroom? That’s roughly what it costs to make and install a set of curtains that will help keep their room warm and healthy throughout winter. Every donation makes a difference to help families in need. We’re matching donations made to Wellington’s Sustainability Trust, Christchurch’s Community Energy Action Charitable Trust or Habitat for Humanity Northern Region up to the total value of $100,000. Last day for donation matching is 27th: https://bit.ly/3UmAwOD

Meet Andrew Coxon, a Product Owner who first joined Genesis in 2017, and then again in 2019. Describe what you do to a 10-year-old... Imagine you're building a treehouse with your friends. The Product Owner is like the friend who decides what the treehouse should look like and what cool things it should have inside. They talk to everyone else and make sure everyone knows what needs to be done. They might say things like, "We need a ladder here," or "Let's have a secret trapdoor!" They help make sure the treehouse turns out just right, according to what everyone wants. Where were you born? Southampton, UK. Me and my other half came to NZ for an exciting year abroad but we loved it so much we ended up settling here permanently and now enjoy living on Waiheke Island. What’s on your bucket list? To celebrate (or commiserate) my 40th birthday I decided I would do 40 ‘new’ things. These had to be challenging and memorable in some way like going on a safari in Africa, learning to play the cello, glass blowing, and cheese making. What are you known for around the office? Making gin – I learned how to distil gin with my brother as a hobby and we experimented with lots of recipes to get the perfect blend. Now we own a beautiful copper still and have taught others how to make gin from scratch. What is your favourite project you’ve worked on? I was involved in developing Power Shout! It was fascinating to test out ideas and prototypes with our customers, incorporating their feedback to make the product a success. It’s a special feeling when I see it advertised on TV and hear positive feedback from customers, knowing I played a small part in it.
