It may be: general to all tastants (total), partial to some tastants, or specific to one or more tastants; due to transport disorders (in access to the interior of the taste bud) or sensorineural disorders (affecting the gustatory sensory cells or nerves or the central gustatory neural pathways); or hereditary or acquired.

Ageusia
A rarely reported neurologic defect consisting of a complete (rather than partial, or hypogeusia) loss of signals from the tongue for sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and umami taste.Aetiology
• Neurology Local damage to the lingual (supplies the anterior 2/3 of the tongue) and glossopharyngeal nerves (posterior 1/3); more central damage (e.g., Bell’s plasy, familial dysautonomia, multiple sclerosis, primary amoebic meningoencephalitis).
• Drug-related Antirheumatics (e.g., penicillamine), chemotherapeutics (e.g., cisplatin), and others (e.g., ACE inhibitors, clarithromycin, zopiclone).
• Endocrinology Cushing's syndrome, hypothyroidism, diabetes.
• Nutritional Niacin and zinc deficiencies.
• Others Radiation therapy, glossitis, tobacco, ageing, anxiety, cancer, renal failure, liver failure.
