Letter from the Editor

Dear friends and colleagues,

I hope you have all had a stellar beginning to Dark and Quiet Skies month!

We started this month with two live public workshops on smartphone astrophotography and will hold one more on 14 May (primarily in Korean, with English subtitles and translations). We are also continuing to support our Global Light Pollution Initiatives Survey and the Dark and Quiet Sky Protector programme. The feature below gives some more details about our final event, the OAO Seminar on the Cultural Relevance of Dark and Quiet Sky Protection. We hope you'll be able to join us for this star-studded event on 31 May at 1pm UTC! And, if you're excited about what we do at the OAO, please consider joining us by applying for the International Outreach Officer position.

In this Newsletter, there are so many ways to celebrate astronomy. We encourage you to participate in the OAE Astrophotography Contest (in which there is an OAO-sponsored smartphone astrophotography category). You might consider joining the National Festival in Popular Astronomy in Algeria or taking advantage of the discount available to educators at EclipseGlasses.com.

As always, we have some exciting opportunities and resources available to you and your teams as you develop your outreach practice.

Finally, we would like to thank our IAU National Outreach Coordinators for all the work they do in their communities. They inspire us at the OAO to create relevant and exciting content.

Please take the time to go out and enjoy the night sky this month (and every month). And of course:

May your skies be dark and quiet,
Kelly Blumenthal, on behalf of the IAU Office for Astronomy Outreach Team

Dark and Quiet Skies: OAO Seminar on the Cultural Relevance of Dark and Quiet Sky Protection

Join us on 31 May 2023 at 13:00 UTC for our IAU OAO Seminar on the Protection of Dark and Quiet Skies: the Cultural Relevance of Dark and Quiet Sky Protection. This online event will bring together astronomers, cultural practitioners, artists, activists, and outreach professionals to share their connection to the dark and quiet sky and its importance to the world’s cultures. We invite everyone – from students to professional astronomers to Indigenous knowledge holders – to tune in, learn about, and engage with this important issue.

Pre-registration for this event is strongly suggested.

We will be joined by:

Masaaki Hiramatsu (NAOJ), Manuel Grullon (IAU NOC Dominican Republic), Lya Osborn (Light Justice), Duane Hamacher (University of Melbourne), Krystal de Napoli (Monash University), Bon Mott (artist, educator, and curator based out of Melbourne, Australia), Aparna Venkatesan (University of San Francisco), and Jessica Heim (University of Southern Queensland; IAU CPS).

1) IAU OAO International Outreach Officer Position Open
The OAO is seeking a motivated individual to join as International Outreach Officer. The position is full-time and will be based at the OAO, which is located at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, Mitaka Campus, in Tokyo, Japan.

For more information, eligibility, and details on how to submit your application, see this announcement.

2) 18th Edition of the National Festival in Popular Astronomy
You're invited to the 18th Edition of the National Festival in Popular Astronomy, from 22-24 June 2023, in Constantine, Algeria!

This year's edition will be dedicated to "Exploring the Invisible Universe: Celebrating one year of the putting into service of the James Webb Space Telescope" and is supported by the International Astronomical Union, the African Astronomical Society and the Arab Union for Astronomy & Space Science.

The organisers will provide free local accommodation for African amateur and professional astronomers who will join the festival. For more information about this event, see the conference website.

3) IAU OAE 3rd Astrophotography Contest
The IAU Office of Astronomy for Education (OAE) has launched the third edition of its astrophotography contest. This year, the OAE invites participants to submit images in the following categories: phases of Venus, day arcs of the Sun and solargraphs, sunrise and sunset location over the year, and images of any astronomical object taken exclusively with smartphones or mobile devices. The deadline for submissions is 30 June 2023 at noon CET. Submissions will be evaluated by an international panel of astrophotographers and astronomy educators, who will consider not only the aesthetic and technical qualities of the images but also the educational value of each entry in the context of primary and secondary school teaching.

For more information about the OAE competition and to submit your photographs, go to this website.
4) TWAS Regional Awards for 2023
The World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries (TWAS) Regional Awards for 2023 will be awarded in recognition of significant and innovative contributions to scientific educational material that help to advance the quality of science education in the Arab Region.  Each TWAS Regional Award winner will receive $3,000.

For more information about the award and eligibility, see the TWAS Award website.
5) EclipseGlasses.com Educator Discount
In honour of the upcoming eclipses, EclipseGlasses.com is providing a special discount for educators on their eclipse glasses and their smartphone filter, Solar Snap. This filter, which also comes with a free download of the Solar Snap application, allows you and your students to safely take photos of a solar eclipse while experiencing it in real time. 6) Updates from the IAU National Outreach Coordinators (NOCs)

a) Côte d’Ivoire
The Ivorian state aims to launch the first Ivorian satellite by 2024 and create an Ivorian space agency.  On 18 May, the NOC Côte d'Ivoire is helping to organise an event called ''AstroPause'' to discuss the stakes and challenges of this space agency. The talk will be given by Dr Aka, an epistemologist and philosopher of science.

b) Haiti
The NOC Haiti Team has once again produced a great video for the public, this time on the Sun. It is available in Haitian, with subtitles in English. You can find the video at this link.

c) Kuwait
On Sunday the 23 April, the NOC Kuwait Team observed the appulse of Venus and the crescent of the month of Shawwal at the Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Centre. The event drew many visitors to the Centre, and they enjoyed viewing this astronomical event with telescopes and with the unaided eye.

d) Qatar
The Qatar Ministry of Education announced the results of its Qatar Astronomy Olympiad for Schools 2022-2023, held during the academic year 2022-2023. In total, there were 58 winner schools in two astronomical projects, and more than 40 schools purchased telescopes to fulfil this project. The Olympiad is supervised and run by National Outreach Coordinate Office in Qatar, the Arab Union for Astronomy & Space Sciences and Qatar Calendar House.

7) Opportunities

a) Skyscape Archaeology Research Grants
The Sophia Centre/JSA Skyscape Archaeology Research Grants support, promote and nurture future research projects by students and early career researchers in the field of skyscape archaeology. Each grant will consist of a maximum of £500 to be used towards the execution of a research project. Projects may be part of their studies (if this is allowed by their programme or unit), completely independent pieces of research or pilot projects for further studies.

Applications are received on a rolling basis - you can apply at any time, provided that funds are still available. To enquire whether funds are still available, contact Dr Fabio Silva (fsilva@bournemouth.ac.uk) ahead of submitting an application.

For more information about this opportunity, refer to this informational document.
