If you're from the UK you might be feeling a bit sorry for yourself right now, and maybe a bit hungover? ⚽️ One of my favourite tactics in digital PR is providing supporting data for an event already dominating the newscycle and in the UK, nothing has been more popular than England getting to the final of the Euros (again!) We did some quick maths and calculated the impact on UK businesses due to lost productivity from employees coming to work hungover after watching England games. Our data analysed existing stats on how many people were likely to watch the Euros, salary information and average number of UK drinkers and found that: - Today, hangovers from the Euros 2024 final could cost businesses £409 million in lost productivity - England played six matches which preceded a working day, meaning businesses could have lost up to £2.4 billion in total  - 11.8 million UK adults, the number of alcohol drinkers watching the Euros tournament, could go to work hungover today - Hungover workers could cost UK businesses £34.68 per person, per day - UK businesses could lose 23 million working hours due to Euros 2024 hangovers Features in The Sun, Evening Standard, HR News and more. Radio Exe has largest-ever audience! 📻 One of the UK’s few remaining independent commercial radio stations has enjoyed a surge in listening. Devon’s Radio Exe now has around 75,000 listeners a month and has surpassed 300,000 weekly listening hours for the first time. Independent data from Ipsos Mori on behalf of industry body Rajar for the 12 months from April 2023 measures only the eastern part of Radio Exe’s transmission area, which includes Exeter, Mid and East Devon, Teignbridge and Torbay. It shows listening to the station has increased by 50 per cent in the past year. Separately, Radio Exe’s own proprietary data, which assesses digital listening on apps and online, but not FM and DAB digital radio, shows that listening to Radio Exe’s output in the Plymouth/West area is now about the same as digital listening in the Exeter/East part of the county. The station puts the success down to its commitment to staying local at a time when other broadcasters are withdrawing programming from the county. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/e8eWcTtz

We're about to have an election in the UK. One of the main talking points of this political cycle has been how many people get their information, not from debates or manifestos, but through analysis on political podcasts. It got me thinking about what makes a "good" political podcast, the difference between audio and TikTok, and how I feel about the role of podcasting in this controversial and sensitive space. During this process, I came out with another takeaway: Podcasts wouldn’t be the phenomenon they have become without politics. The industry likes to point to the success of true crime as the catalyst for podcasting’s mainstream popularity. But speak to some of the hosts who have made it big in the last five years, and they’ll point, often begrudgingly, to Joe Rogan as the reason they can make podcasting their full-time career. You might take umbrage with this for moral reasons. Fine. I switched to Tidal when Rogan was bought by Spotify. But the political divisions we see in society have been easily capitalized on by political podcasts across the ideological spectrum. If the aim is to create a vacuum where only one ideology exists, why not start a podcast? Not all political podcasts are nurturing polemical silos. Many attempt to at least understand where the other side is coming from. And while they risk offending everyone and satisfying no one, there is bravery in championing a bipartisan approach. In my recent list for Podcast Review, I chose a range of shows that occupy different positions on many things, but they share a common theme: curiosity towards difficult issues. Just say no In what is a good illustration of the terrible rates today's freelance journalists can expect, I've just been offered £200 from a major UK tabloid for exclusive rights (which means I can't sell it anywhere else) for a real life case study. I'd have to interview them and write the article. They also wanted a 'large selection of photos' thrown in. All in all, probably three days' work and that's before you get to the editor's queries/edits. When I tried to negotiate they offered me an extra 50 quid. To put it into context, if you were freelancing in the 1980s & 90s you'd be looking at around £1,000 and that's not accounting for inflation. On which note, if you're looking for a good writer with loads of experience to do website copy, press releases, White Papers, op eds, advertorials, branded copy, editing, sub editing etc and you're paying more than 🥜 please do get in touch. #copywriting #copywriterforhire #advertorials #brandedcontent #freelancing #journalism #writing #opentowork
