Fashion predictions for the 2020 Oscars
Forget winter and summer, the best season of them all is upon us…awards season. At the start of January, we saw our favourite stars take to the red carpet for the Golden Globes and now we wait impatiently for February 10th to see what styles we will love and loathe at the 2020 Oscars ceremony. So, what trends do we predict will make an impact on the carpet and which stars are we most excited to see?
Predicted 2020 Oscars fashion trends
1. Sustainable fashion
There is more pressure than ever for businesses and individuals to go greener and make more sustainable fashion choices, and celebrities are not exempt from this. For this ceremony, you should expect to see dresses made of ethically sourced fabrics and perhaps even vintage gowns. Some stars may even take this trend one step further and wear eco-friendly gowns in shades of green with floral patterns, to truly show off their love of the environment.
2. Political statements
In 2018 at the Golden Globe awards, the majority of female attendees wore black in protest over sexual harassment in Hollywood and to show solidarity with the women and men who had vocalised their abuse in the Time’s Up movement. While this may have been a particularly memorable moment where politics fused with fashion, for years celebrities have been using award shows to display their political opinions. For example, many stars wore ‘Je Suis Charlie’ badges at the 2015 Golden Globes to support victims of the terror attack in Paris, and in 2017 actress Emma Stone wore a pin on her Givenchy dress to support planned parenthood. With so many political events and issues being raised this year, we can’t wait to see how stars will include politics in their outfits.
3. No more gender rules
When you think of iconic red carpet looks from the past few years, no doubt Billy Porter’s stunning black ball gown from the 2019 Met Gala will spring to mind. You may also think of Angelia Jolie’s 2014 BAFTAs tuxedo. In today’s fashion, there are no rules. So on this year’s red carpet, we predict there will be women in sleek tailored suits and men sporting more feminine looks; think silk blouses and maybe even a kilt or two.
4. Jewel is the new black
There is perhaps nothing more stylish than a well-tailored black dress. However, over the course of an awards season monochrome colours are seen frequently and begin to look rather drab and forgettable. For this reason, stars are expected to favour deeper jewel tones, think dark green and rich purple, for an elegant gown that still has the wow-factor.

• Jennifer Lopez
Fans and cinema lovers were outraged when Lopez didn’t receive an Oscars nomination for her role in the movie Hustlers. There have been a lot of rumours whether or not Lopez will not attend the ceremony, and we certainly hope she does. Lopez has always made a statement on the red carpet (remember her 2000 Grammy Award green dress?) and we hope she shows up to the Oscars is an equally memorable gown.
• Billie Eilish
2020 has already been a monumental year for Eilish; after being announced as the next singer of the James Bond theme song, she swept up five awards at the 2020 Grammys. To top it all off, Eilish was announced earlier this month to be performing at the Oscars ceremony. Known for her oversized, quirky style we can’t help but wonder if Eilish will ditch her signature neon shorts for a gown?
• Joaquin Phoenix
Critics claim Phoenix is a shoo-in for the best actor Oscar, after starring in Joker. Known for rocking red carpets with sunglasses and black suits, this may be the year that Phoenix makes a huge style statement to celebrate his moment of glory. Some have theorised that Phoenix may wear a vibrant red or purple suit as a nod to his role in Joker.
• Saoirse Ronan
Despite being just 24 years old, Ronan has quickly made a strong impression in the fashion world and is renowned for her elegant red carpet looks. With three Oscar nomination already under her belt, 2020 could be the year she takes an Oscar home for her portrayal of Jo in Little Women. We can’t wait to see whether Ronan sticks with her signature pink and pastel colour scheme or opts for something more daring at the 2020 ceremony.
