To accept recognition, praise, or approval for something, whether or not it is deserved. I really can't take credit—Harry and Lisa are the one's who really made this a success! She tries to get by doing as little as possible, then tries to take credit for other people's work.

to allow people to believe that one has done something praiseworthy, whether or not one has actually done it. I can't take credit for the entire success. Toby helped a lot. Mary took credit for everything that Dave did.
