A mix of robots, westerns and a lot of digging. It does get slightly repetitive and takes a while to get the good upgrades but when you do digging becomes like slicing through butter. Took about 5 hours to complete the story, sets up for the sequel quite nicely.

Really enjoyable metroidvania about a digging robot. It's kind of addicting, short but sweet experience. I can't wait to try the second game, unexpectedly it has a deep story going on.Updated 3 Weeks Ago

What great and addicting indie game.Gameplay Mechanics are really satisfying and enjoyable.
Visuals are simple but still nice and audio/music is average.
Star of the show here is really the addictive gameplay and apart some moments you can get a bit lost about what to do, everything is very enjoyable and satisfying to play.
Very nice game overall.

An absolute indie classic. Short and sweet, it keeps it simple with a very satisfying gameplay loop. Overall, things are kept very desolate in the town of Tumbleton. You're sent there by the request of a late estranged uncle who has passed the deed for the town mine onto you. The very few townspeople have even less of a clue as to why your uncle would do this - regardless, you push deeper, hundreds and hundreds of meters. The gameplay mainly consists of mining for ore in the mines and exploring caves, barely coming up for air on the surface for a few moments to sell materials and upgrade your tools and armor, completely reconstructing Rusty's body with mysterious tech. The story is kept simple but is satisfying in the end, the perfect amount for the length of the game.In the end, while I could see how some things could bother people such as a somewhat anticlimactic ending and the quiet town atmosphere, I find it all adds to the greater experience. My first indie game many years ago and still one of my favorites.

I’m not good at either platformers or Metroidvanias, but I did take it upon myself to try and play more of them, and I am surprised as for how much I enjoyed this.SteamWorld dig introduces a simple loop of digging deeper and deeper for minerals, climbing back up to sell your finding, and buying better equipment to improve your traversing abilities.
It’s a simple but effective loop, and the game is short enough for it not to become boring.
Also, the difficulty bar is set quite low. I’m awful at platforming boss fights, and while the final boss did take me several attempts to master, it never felt out of reach. I managed to figure everything out without the need to a walkthrough or a video and felt satisfied with the conclusion of the game.
A good indie game, and I’ll get around to playing the second game in the series sometime in the future.

A cute small game, which I played through just in three days, laying in bed with fever.Mechanics here are very simple and repetitive, but digging through the earth never gets boring.
Steamworld Dig is positioned as a metroidvania, and here you feel a constant progress indeed. The good thing is that the game doesn't torture you with backtracking, holding this part to the very end of the game.
Another advantage is a fairly low difficulty level, which made the game joyable even in my feverish condition.
I didn't really enjoy graphics or rather artwork of the game, and would be happy to discover more secrets and puzzles, but these are my own taste issues. The game is good as it is, and I will definetily dig more into the series.

After a rather satisfying run on SteamWorld Dig 2, I told myself that maybe there was some good time to spend with the first one. Bad idea. Without being a bad time, SWD1 is very short, very easy (although a little more difficult than 2 since the enemies are more aggressive) and above all, very repetitive. In fact, it's quite simple: the first (and less good) part of SWD2 is equivalent to the entirety of SWD1. Digging, backtracking, digging, backtracking, digging, backtracking... etc. Fortunately not for long, but it's hardly exciting.Updated 3.5 Months Ago

There's something very special about finding a solid gameplay loop. Let alone one that proves to be effective and tie directly into the story of the title. Steamworld is able to beautifuly tie in the simplest game premise/story with one of the simplest gameplay loops I've ever seen and it works wonders.Updated 4 Months Ago

This game surprised me... it's very simple: you dig, collect minerals, improve your equipment, kill some animals, and keep digging haha but it's good... and addictive. The improvements to the character are very significant, and help the endeavor a lot. The 2D graphics and subtitles look great. Don't expect an elaborate story, but the adventure is intriguing (you want to know what's down there haha).Negative points I saw: at certain times you don't know exactly where to go, and the double jump ability sometimes doesn't work well when you're on walls. They could also display the amount of health of monsters. Still, it's worth it.

(7.5/10 rounded up to an 8)Solid game with a few annoying quirks. I enjoyed the main gameplay of digging to find ore and caves, and although there really isn’t more to it than that it’s still enjoyable and didnt overstay it’s welcome too much. The metroidvania elements were well implemented and the sense of progression feels great, until you get to the last area where it reached a halt and I had a lot less fun. I realized later that this was my fault but it was still frustrating. Certain obstacles are extremely annoying to deal with and losing half your money every time you die with no way to get it back was a bit too punishing by the end. There should’ve been an upgrade that lets you lower Repair Cost. Still, it’s a fun time that lays an excellent foundation for a sequel.

+ Addictive gameplay loop;

A surprisingly great game that exercises a fantastic underlying knowledge of how to do a metroidvania correctly. And also for me , perfect because its , short and doesn't require much of your immediate attention. I owned Dig 2 through a bundle but not the original , so £1.22 and 6 and a half hours later , here I am. I really enjoyed this , looking forward to playing the sequel.9/10.

An interesting little game. You dig down into the earth collecting money so that you can buy upgrades and dig even deeper to find more money. It’s a simple, but immensely satisfying game loop that’s attached to a charming game with a fun aesthetic. Playing it gave me nostalgia for old flash games despite the game not being a flash game itself.Updated 1.5 Years Ago

Updated 1.5 Years Ago

I thought this game was delightful. I really enjoyed the cartoony steampunk art style, and the soundtrack and sound effects were catchy for me. The gameplay loop was simple but addictive, which is why I burned through this game in just two days. The game came out in 2013 and it's very short and small scale. However, I think that's part of the charm.Updated 2 Years Ago

I played Dig 1 after completing Dig 2. Because I went thru the learning curve with Dig 2, Dig 1 was a lot easier. Although the game was much shorter and I wish there was more to the game, I feel there is more replay potential for Dig 2 because of its short gameplay. I actually liked the double jump and sprint from Dig 1 a whole lot better. The dialogue was still "skim only". It'd been better if it was narrated for both games. Overall, the game was fun.Updated 2.5 Years Ago

I came to this game with pretty low expectations because I thought it was going to feel repetitive, but the digging is actually quite fun! At the very beginning it is pretty straightforward, just depending on buying upgrades, but the levels get more intricate and with more obstacles that you have to think how to navigate. The story is minimal, but at this point with the rest of the Steamworld games out there, it looks like it’s going to tie up nicely (I played Heist before this one).
