What do I do if I get an error stating "api-ms-win-crt-heap-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your computer" after installing or updating ESO?

If you receive a System Error message that states "The program can't start because api-ms-win-crt-heap-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your computer" when attempting to launch The Elder Scrolls Online, follow the troubleshooting steps for your platform below:

Windows 10

If playing on Windows 10, the missing files should be included in regular Windows Updates. Ensure that Windows Update is running and that all current updates have been downloaded and installed. After running all of the required updates, please reboot your computer for the changes to take effect. Once you have rebooted your machine, you should check to see if any additional updates are now available. You may need to update and restart your machine multiple times before all updates are installed.

Windows 7, 8, 8.1

To ensure there are no issues, you should check that you have all Windows updates installed (using Windows Update), including both the required and optional updates. After running all of the required updates, please reboot your computer for the changes to take effect. Once you have rebooted your machine, you should check to see if any additional updates are now available. You may need to update and restart your machine multiple times before all updates are installed.

Specifically, you should ensure you have downloaded and installed the following updates:

  • KB2919355 (April 2014 Update) - this is a ~800 MB update and may require you to install other updates first. We recommend that you keep your OS is fully updated.
  • KB2999226 (Update for Universal C Runtime in Windows).

You should also repair then uninstall and reinstall "vcredist_x64_2015.exe" and "vcredist_x86_2015.exe" (if you're on a 64bit Windows OS) from the ESO Launcher directory or download Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015.

Finally, you should ensure that you have completely updated your graphics card drivers, including the drivers for integrated GPUs (usually found in Windows Update).

If you are unable to run Windows Update successfully, or are having issues downloading or installing the updates, you should contact Microsoft Support
