Growth: • Increase Daily Active Users (DAU): Focus on boosting your DAU as it’s directly tied to your game’s daily revenue. • Optimize Acquisition Channels: Regularly monitor your acquisition sources and refine your strategies to reduce Cost Per Acquisition (CPA) while maximizing your marketing budget efficiency. 2. Retention: • Prioritize Retention Rates: High retention rates are essential for the long-term success of your game. • Measure at Key Intervals: Track user retention at critical points (e.g., Day 1, Day 7, Day 30) to identify trends and areas for improvement. • Enhance New User Retention: Develop strategies to keep new players engaged and coming back, building a loyal player base. 3. Engagement: • Track Monthly Active Days: Monitor how many days per month your players are active to gauge overall engagement levels. • Foster Core User Engagement: Ensure your core players are deeply engaged, as they are more likely to make repeated transactions and contribute to higher Lifetime Value (LTV). 4. “Yo!” – This is how I usually say “Hi!” to people around me, at least to the one's that I have a tiny bit closer relationship than a formal one. However, that had to be “adjusted” for the task I've put myself to. Last time I posted about my new position at Captomatic. Which might sound like “big news”, but in this post, I want to talk about something different. While having a glance at the post itself, to see how it was doing, I've noticed the something in the attached .gif image. There was a white plastic piece attached to my shirt. While everything was calculated and accounted for, noticing it for the N-th time inspired me to write this post, which is going to be about me stepping in front of a camera for the first time. There are 2 parts to this short story. Got a little too carried away while writing and the full story is too long to post at once, so it is a good thing it's split. Will start with the personal one, something tells me that this is what people here might be more interested in :) As mentioned before, this was first time for me stepping in front of a camera. It's not like I have never been filmed before. Let me specify – this was the first time for me stepping in front of a camera to deliberately deliver information to the audience. From the countless meetings and calls with clients, potential clients and “leads”, I've got an idea that it is much more efficient to show how one of our systems work in a video, rather than spending time at each meeting or drawing 1001 sales materials and diagrams, that each individual will interpret in a different way. This just seemed like a more appropriate way to deliver the information. I came up with a plan to film a video that I can easily send my colleagues at sales and my potential clients, where I showcase the new system. The concept is simple – me standing next to a screen and showing the viewer how simple it is to use our new app. On paper – simple, in practice – a little bit less that simple. Can't say that the filming process and video itself was perfect, nor can I say it was bad. All of it turned out the way I expected it to. I am more than satisfied of how the equipment worked, maybe except the color-grading between the iPhone main camera and the “3x zoom” one. The video editing process took a lot more time than expected, learned a lot during the process. The most challenging part was the “act”. I had prepared a script for the video. To be fair, mostly (underline this), the video follows the script, but boy was it hard to keep up. Note to self – read the script a couple of more times beforehand, while You can have takes during filming – the more You take – the more You will regret it during editing. I even thought of sending my colleagues a blooper, where I say "..with all of that.." 18(!) times. Great experience, lots of small know-hows learned. The next part for sure will be better. In the latest Elite Game Developers newsletter Edvard Groundstroem, co-founder of Flowstate Games, which shut down recently, shares his learnings. In a typical 🇫🇮 Finnish way, there's zero sugar coating. I recommend everyone to read it. Here are my three key takeaways from the interview: 1️⃣ Have a compelling strategy and adjust your work inside of it rather than pivoting to the new and shiny thing when the going gets rough. Without a strategy, you're making MVPs that lead to failing fast and pivoting too soon into the unknown. While we hear stories of pivots leading to ultimate success, the vast majority of startups (and not only startups...) pivoted themselves to death without ever building any expertise in anything. I've made this mistake multiple times before and only in my startup was I adamant never to switch genres. 2️⃣ Listen to VCs but don't take orders from them. Chasing "product-VC" fit and trying to hit their "flavor of the week KPIs" means that you've handed control of the direction of your company to an external party. I was there too thinking that VCs know it all. It wasn't until I understood that VCs give a perspective not a direction that our execution improved. Listen to VCs but remember that the ultimate decision is on you. 3️⃣ Complacency is the death of execution. Startups should be in code red until they start generating sufficient revenue. Getting funded doesn't mean you're good. It means that you have limited runway to prove you can execute. Edvard Groundstroem put it better than I ever could "Making great commercial products that can scale as a business is hard. Understanding how a game goes from good to great is instrumental, and the only way to gain insight into that is to study games that made it, as well as the ones that seemed liked they would but didn’t." This is painful to read. I've failed at instilling product expertise within everyone in the studio multiple times before thinking that if just a few key people have it, it's enough. In this episode of Growth Hacks, the focus is on numbers, metrics, and KPIs. The journey of a startup is often emotional and exciting. When you spark a new idea, you enter a phase of peak creativity, dreaming about potential products, potential allies, and market strategies. However, there comes a point when you must transition from dreaming to doing. Assuming you've built a business model and have assumptions to test, a reality hits. This is a game of numbers, a cycle of attempts, results, feedback, and optimization. Sadly, many founders stumble at this stage. The reason? A lack of focus. There's always another thesis to test, another approach to try, or a pivot to make. But the truth is, that success often lies in focusing on numbers and metrics. Understandably, your core metrics will vary depending on the stage of your startup. For instance, if you are in the fundraising stage without a product yet, your key metrics could include: • The amount of money raised per period. • The number of calls or meetings held each week. Once your MVP is in place, shift your focus to: • The number of people onboarding to your trial period. • Keeping your customer acquisition cost below a certain level. As you launch your product fully, your metrics should evolve to: • The number of conversions from trial periods to paying customers. • Some retention factors. The takeaway here is that knowing your numbers at each stage is crucial. It is important to keep track of these figures, adjust them to suit your project's stage, and understand what they tell you about your startup's performance. Numbers don't lie. They provide an accurate picture of how your actions are performing. If used correctly, they can guide your strategy to improve your startup's performance. Maintaining your focus on numbers, metrics, and KPIs can have a cascading positive effect. Investors will be more likely to engage with you, the community will be more excited, and everything will start to shine. Yes or no? Today during our team call, we discussed out our demo-build and brainstormed missions for our game. One teammate raised a valid concern: Would this idea be understood by future partners? Instead of seeing this as a roadblock, I view it as an opportunity. Successful partnerships thrive on understanding each other's perspectives. In essence, ensuring alignment between our creative vision and partners' expectations is key. Squad Busters: Supercell's Next Billion-Dollar Game? 💰 As a dedicated follower of Supercell, the Finnish mobile gaming powerhouse known for hits like Clash of Clans and Brawl Stars, I'm always excited about their new releases. Supercell's rigorous quality standards mean that any game making it through their testing phase to a global launch is eagerly awaited by both the industry and gamers. It’s been over five years since Supercell launched a new game worldwide, and their latest, Squad Busters, is set to launch globally on May 29th. The game is currently in soft launch in eight countries, including Singapore, allowing me the chance to play it over the past week. At its core, Squad Busters is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game that mixes team-based combat and a battle royale-style shrinking arena. Players assemble squads from Supercell’s iconic character roster to compete in gem-collection battles. Personally, what makes it particularly interesting is its evolved take on the agar.io-style gameplay, where players try to ‘swarm and consume’ other players' units. The game features a polished and pretty addictive gameplay loop. Players begin with a single character, battling NPC (bot) enemies to earn gold which is then used to unlock and evolve squad members. Changing arena conditions and varied game modes help keep the gameplay fresh and engaging. Despite its simplicity, the game requires a strategic approach to decision-making, such as choosing whether to engage NPCs or other players and knowing when to retreat from battles. This complexity adds a strategic depth that may not be initially apparent. However, there are gameplay challenges, especially when players build large squads, making PvP battles chaotic and outcomes unpredictable. Additionally, the game looks and feels more casual + random compared to some of the previous Supercell titles, which is already causing some resistance (in forums) from their typical player base (but could help attract new players to the IP). As is typical in most live service games nowadays but even more so in Squad Busters, Supercell will need to maintain a steady stream of exciting updates and content to retain its player base. Despite these hurdles, Squad Busters’ polished gameplay and innovative blend of genres, coupled with Supercell’s strong track record, suggest it has the potential to be another hit for the developer. #SquadBusters #Supercell #Gaming (My squad in the middle going after the dragon on the right while another player is deliberating attacking me when I am distracted)

Reflecting on Google Game Camp this week, big kudos (as always) to Mariusz Gąsiewski. Yet again he managed to get support and resources to host the event and have teams from mostly Europe meet and discuss the latest trends, and share findings, insights, and best practices. What was different this time was the focus on apps and not only games, proving that apps are catching up in revenue. 📱💡 Some of the points: 1. Revenue from in-app purchases in 2024 is at 89% of games, up from 44% in 2019. Stagnation in gaming (lack of new ideas, too much monetization pressure, iOS privacy issues) versus the rise of popular apps (fintech, personal growth) in new markets. 2. iOS is growing - not in downloads, but in revenue. iOS users convert better, are more likely to keep using the product and monetize better. 3. UA relies on imperfect data (iOS again). The importance of first data is key - some apps use long onboarding to get the user’s email. SKAD 4.0 is tricky, favoring big companies with big budgets. 4. A significant part of revenues (70%+ depending on genre and app type) comes from apps/games that are 5+ years old, making market entry difficult. 5. Very interesting presentation from Anh N. from Wolt on setting up the USA/growth team. Differences when promoting apps vs games (hyper-local vs worldwide targeting). UA includes full-funnel marketing, lifecycle management, creatives, and technicalities (MMP, SKAD, etc.). 🌐📊 6. Interesting take on ASO from Jorge Canga Alonso de Caso from Kaizen Internet. He yet again highlighted the importance of retention and good user experience (bugs, crashes), getting positive reviews, while keywords are just part of the equation. Last but not least: “Communicate the outcome of the app, not its features.” 🗝️👍 7. Jamie Brealey from Triple Dot Studios shared real-world examples of personalization in UA - custom store pages. If the store app page is very different from the ad, conversion may suffer. Good examples of how they tackled this issue when promoting content via influencers. 8. Joy Liu from Skywind and Andreea Negrilă shared their experience with iOS campaigns using SKAD 4.0 - always good to see some numbers and feedback from those who did it. Thanks for sharing. Game Industry Ecosystem ♻️ Yesterday, during dinner with three remarkable individuals from the Swedish game industry in Stockholm, we sparked a discussion about the current challenges in game industry education. We talked about how there are currently too many educational programs, and that many game industry teachers end up getting jobs themselves instead of helping students secure employment, leaving their teaching roles. Additionally, we highlighted the significant gap in the ecosystem—soon, we'll have an influx of newly graduated students who lack the necessary experience to be fully prepared and responsible candidates for companies. This is where organizations like Spelkollektivet and initiatives similar to game jams, summer game camps play a crucial role. They function like boot camps, where students can acquire practical skills necessary to become game developers, regardless of the category. I believe we will soon need more places like Spelkollektivet, where students can learn teamwork, hone their skills, and work on several actual projects. These experiences will help them build real portfolios and sharpen their raw talents. Moreover, such environments enable students to form valuable relationships, potentially leading to the creation of their own companies/startups/consult and freelance. Here are some suggested solutions to help solve this issue: 1. Enhanced internships and apprenticeships 2. Project-based learning 3. Industry-driven curriculum 4. Boot camps and workshops 5.
